themselves in only using scientifically sound survey methods in all the different kinds of survey
that they do. One survey that they conduct is called the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.
This survey is one that is used to judge the overall condition of all Americans’ health and
satisfaction with life. This test has been very successful, they have a very solid way that they
conduct the survey, and they know how to deal with things like bias and under coverage.

Common
flaws or bias that Gallup would face with this include the following: unequal selection
probability of people being polled, nonresponse bias, and accidental double coverage of cell
phone users and landline users in the two sampling frames. Gallup deals with these potential
problems by weighting their surveys (Gallup). They try to match the samples to the United States
population in terms of gender, age, race, education, region, population density, and other factors
that put people into groups. Gallup uses other surveys done about the population of the U.S. as a
whole and the individual states. For example, to separate people’s phone status (people with just
cell phones, just landlines, or people with both) they use the most recent Nation Health Survey;
the most recent U.S. Census is what they base their population density off of (G.). Gallup has
dealt with the possibilities of bias and other flaws very well by using other sources that are
reliable.
The Well-Being Index is very accurate in seeing how Americans feel about their daily
lives. This is probably because of the scientifically sound ways that they poll their
