The GMO Debate

Learning about this topic is important because it can change someone’s current perspective on food, or at least give them new ideas to think about. It also provides necessary knowledge to someone who doesn’t know about the topic in any way shape or form. For example, I found myself second guessing the what I consume, and how much I consume. I already knew about the nutrition aspect of the food unit, but I had no other major preconceptions about the topic. For example, I already previously knew that what you eat impact the way your body functions, and eating better nutritious food is better for your body. During the GMO debate I thought most of the topics we discussed to be surprising and I also learned a lot of information from them. For example, I found it surprising that GMO crops could have so many positive economic factors included with them. Due to the food unit, I am now more conscious of what I eat, and I try to eat more healthy foods. For example, I now read the nutrition facts on the back of the label more often. The classroom activity that impacted me the most would have to be the TED talk we watched …show more content…
I learned so many new things about GMO crops, since I was relatively uninformed. For example, the most interesting thing that I learned when researching and debating was how uninformed people are about the subject, and I believe my assertion is substantiated by the Jimmy Kimmel video we watched. Another example of something I found quite interesting is all the debate around the impact GMO crops have on your health. When researching I found that there is no real sufficient evidence yet to prove whether GMO crops have a negative impact on your health or not. Yet even still there are a lot of heated arguments over the topic, and personally, I’m not sure if I feel comfortable putting random sequences of dna into my

For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism in which “genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially placed into another plant or animal” (Institute for Responsible Technology). Doing so allows for a crop to grow at a higher yield and lower cost.…

GMO’s stands for “genetically modified organisms,” these are strands of DNA that have been modified to help benefit the plant in some form such as making the plant immune to certain diseases or to help the plant grow larger. Arguments in favor of genetically modified organisms include reasons such as the ability to use fewer pesticides because the crop has been modified to be resistant to certain insects. Another argument in favor of GMOs is that the crop is able to grow in more harsh conditions allowing a larger amount of land to be used and benefiting areas that do not have the best conditions to grow food. Increased yields is a benefit seen from introducing genetically modified crops, this is seen as beneficial because with an increased…

In recent years, the outcry of people against genetically modified food, or GM food, has become increasingly prominent in both commercial and governmental practices. GM foods have a negative connotation; people think that eating something that has been modified is going to poison their body. Not only that, but most of the American public believes that in doing this, humans are playing god, and have gone too far. However, none of this is true. So far, none of the GM food currently on the market has any ill-effects on humans.…

For hundreds of years, farmers have been observing their crops through generations and utilizing the benefits of selective breeding to achieve desired results. Historically, this was done by simply choosing which organisms are allowed to reproduce, but recent developments in food science have produced Genetically Modified Organisms. Some find the process of physically rearranging genes to be frightening and unacceptable, while others fully embrace GMOs as the natural next step in future technology. The GMO debate is widely participated in, from laboratories to universities to government to the average home. During a classroom debate in Biology, I was assigned to the pro-GMO team.…

Secondly, the anti-GMO movement is another disadvantage of genetically modified sugar beets. In recent years, many consumers and companies have moved away from genetically modified products, which could prove harmful to the sugarbeet industry since most of its makeup is genetically engineered. In 2015, director of product transparency at the Hershey Co., Deborah Arcoleo, stated, "We started reformulating Hershey's Kisses, Hershey's milk chocolate, and Hershey's milk chocolate with almonds, to move from beet sugar […] and that's complete. Now we're looking to do that across the rest of our portfolio" (Charles, 2016). In the same article, Dan Charles also mentions that at least a third of the American Crystal Sugar Company is converting their…

First off a GMO is a living organism that has been modified in a laboratory, this is a simple definition of course. The fact that many countries have outlawed them makes me wonder about the safety of messing with Mother Nature. I’ve read some reports that say that GMOs have now been linked to causing kidney and liver damage as well (Photo attached from study). In a 2012 study a research team headed by Gilles-Eric Seralini at France’s Caen University, and they showed a link. The interesting thing to note is that the study had four months of reviews before it was published.…

With the rate at which our planets population is growing, what are we going to eat when we run out of room to plant crops, raise animals? There is always the option of genetically modified organisms or GMO’s, meats that are grown in labratories, algae, or even insects, but all of these are “temporary fixes” to the real problem. How can we sustainably survive on this planet at all if we continue down this path of over consumption? According to the Non GMO Project, GMO’s are defined as living organisms whose genetic material has been altered via genetic engineering in a laboratory (GMO Facts, 2016).…

Lars Lindgren BIOL 3416-508 Common Arguments Against and in the Support of GMOs The policies surrounding genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are one of the most divisive issues in biotechnology and genetic engineering as genetically modified crops directly influence today’s two main areas of current controversy: the environment and the economy. Criticism of environmental conditions are regularly based off the idea that “natural” is better. Besides the given premise that GMOs are created by artificial modifications in an organism’s genetic code, gene flow between species also plays a role in how GMOs affect the environment. In this case, gene flow refers to the horizontal transfer of genetic material from a genetically modified…

At the beginning portion of my project, I thought that genetically modified products were just an unnecessarily controversial topic, but now I am aware why it is considered a big issue and that they have some serious effects on humans. After I acquired that knowledge, I began to think everything that wasn’t non-GMO or organic was bad, but now I know that is not the case. I began to realize that all GMOs and their effects cannot be entirely avoided. However, you can make minor modifications to your life to avoid dealing with the effects, such as paying attention to what you are putting in your grocery cart or by starting a garden. While I have learned much about my personal project topic, I have also learned about my global context.…

The population is still growing and some way of combating the issue of malnutrition and world hunger is desperately needed before they become even more serious. That is where genetically modified organisms (GMOs) come in. GMOs are fruits or vegetables that have been modified on a genetic level in order to turn on traits that make them more beneficial.
