The Future of Education The future of our educational system is brought to attention in Randy Mitchell’s article “Emanation and Generation”. This article was first published online on December
7th, 2006 by author, Randy Mitchell (Wiley Online Library). Mitchell is an Associate Vice President in the Student Success Programs at James Madison University and is also the author of multiple books on the subject of student learning (Atwood Publishing). Mitchell’s experience in the education system gives him insight on what happens in upper level education: he has a diverse background in the educational field, specifically administration. This is not necessarily because of the language choice, but because of the references to teaching. In his article, Mitchell states “…reports that too many goals and objectives in higher education organizations are written as activities for staff rather than as outcomes for students.” (Mitchell). When a student attempts to comprehend this, they do not have the prior knowledge that a teacher may on the goals and objectives that are spoken of. Mitchell declares that emanation has times when it should be used, but generation is what should be used a majority of the time in higher education (Mitchell). If a student’s hand is held through their education, then they will not perform well on their own. Another point that is made is that knowledgeable citizens come from the use of generation (Mitchell). This is one of my favorite points throughout his article because if someone is cradled their entire life, then they will not know what it is like to actually work on their own. If someone is taught by generation, then they have the necessary skills and mindset that will enable them to strive for success in their career. One point that I do not necessarily agree with is educational programs and services being based on wanted outcomes (Mitchell). Teachers can focus on both their efforts and the outcomes of students rather than just the outcomes. If they did this, then they would be able to make sure that they are giving the most they can to the students while the students still achieve the
