Attendance, submitting work on time, and proper behavior are not just for nothing. In the classroom, one is not only learning an important subject, they also learn responsibility, promptness, discipline, and negotiation skills (Schaefer 310). Education helps segue knowledge that was taught at home into information that can be used towards a career and therefore, is considered the middleman in a person’s life cycle. The guidance school employees give, the amount of support that is provided for each students’ study area, and the amount of funds that are allocated to certain programs all play an important role in regulation. For example, students may be encouraged to choose a study that is considered more appropriate for their gender like nursing for women or the sciences for men (Schaefer 310). Role allocation is a form of social control that is not only enforcing gender roles of society, but is also a tool to put students in the utmost appropriate and qualifiable study area. According to functionalist perspective, this form of social control would deem stability and harmony in society and would have a positive effect on job opportunities. However, the restrictions and borders of education do not incapacitate individuals. The functionalist perspective depicts education as an advantageous institution. The economy and politics of a society would not properly function with it and as a result, education is seen as an indispensable part of society. It is effective in disseminating social culture and serves to encourage social and political unification. Plus, education introduces the norms, values, and sanctions of a larger society and provides the means that are needed to change or alter some of these norms, values, or sanctions.
