After having gone to the Burkhart center a few times now, the kids are engaging really well with us and the activities we plan for them. We start each session by reminding them of the rules which are to be respectful, use positive language and most importantly to try. By telling them that they should at least try an activity they end up turning that involvement into engagement. There was one instance where a student was not wanting to participate in the Macarena, but because he had to try he gradually began to like the activity. Of course, the song went on for an eternity so even though he didn’t like it at first, he had plenty of time to warm up to it. He even added his own twists to some of the moves to the Macarena. It’s another sense of comfort to the kids so they know what to expect each session. Since the rest of the group and I meet up before the sessions, we have time to meticulously plan out activities and we can talk about how it may be received by the kids. Nothing is hindering us because we ask questions and communicate with the parents and the students which give us a better sense of what we need to do. Because we do things like communicating with one another constantly and planning we don’t have any problems.
