The Front Bottoms: Song Analysis

Decent Essays
The Front Bottoms are an Indie Folk Rock band that came out of New Jersey in 2007. Brian Sella and Matt Uychich are the founding members of the band. There are 2 other members that tour with them but Brian and Matt write all the material. They released 3 albums independently before getting their big break when they signed to Bar None records in 2011. In 2015 they got signed to Fueled by Ramen, which is a huge record label for rock bands today. They have released 6 albums so far and they are about to release another one on October 13th of this year. Their song “Twin Size Mattress”, released in 2013, has been their highest charting single so far but it is not their best song in my opinion. Their best song would have to be “Flashlight” which is

Everyone has or had troubles trying to find themselves in life. Making a name for yourself and becoming a good soul is one of the hardest things to do. There’s pressure, anxiety, and way too much judgement. My favorite band, The Goo Goo Dolls, put so much feeling and meaning in their songs. They sing Iris, my favorite song, which talks about being true to yourself and not taking life for granted.…

Vin Dammann (vocals, rhythm guitar), Dan Tumolo (drums), Rich Ealer (lead guitar, vocals) and Morgan Bartz (bass), make up the local New Jersey alternative band. Constructed from their Eps Beach House, Leaving Rip City and Its Not Your Pain, they delivered a thorough performance. Throughout, Ealer and his guitar were captivating to say the least. Not to say the foursome did not ‘wow’ as a whole, just the imaginativeness was admirable. For instance “Rhythm to Rhythm” from Leaving Rip City, the lead added rock-like melodies in between verses.…

Each year many children, teachers, and other innocent people died because of gun shooting violence in school. Most of the time, it’s the person who was oftenly being bullied and teased at who commits this crime. Thus, we should prevent bullying and promote the consequences of gun violence. The songs, “Jeremy,” by Pearl Jam and “Pumped Up Kicks,” by Foster the People, both addresses the issues due to gun violence in school, but the first song is more successful because the meaning of the lyrics is more clear, the tone and music style described relates to this serious issue, and the music video did a better job in telling this problem. The lyrics to “Jeremy” are very straightforward and easy to understand.…

In the fifth line, Brooks declares that she “[wants] to go in the back yard now,” representing how she has now grown up enough and is ready to go out on her own. In the sixth line, she says that she may want to go “down the alley,” illustrating how she has become more rebellious than before and wants to experience even more than she did before. In the first stanza, Brooks only wanted to “peek at the back,” but now she wants to go in the back and go down the alley. The “alley” is used to represent the extremities Brooks will go to in order to change her life. The “alley” is so far away from what she is used to in the front yard, so she wants to go there in order to experience all that she can.…

Throughout history, rock and roll has always been a male dominated genre consistently focusing on the male listener. From the beginning of this enormously popular genre, Women waited patiently to find a way and to be accepted into this “man’s world.” As years past this continued to be an issue for women as they tried to knock down those doors and even today one can argue that women continue to fight for that spot that they rightfully deserve. Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I.’s 2013 music video for their hit single “Blurred Lines” depicts three females in little clothing performing seemingly innocent acts that have sexual connotations while dancing around and engaging with the three well dressed men who seem to only be watching the women, which sets the tone that the women are only there to serve as eye candy for the men. The first thing the 503.3 million viewers of the “Blurred Lines” music video on Vevo saw was Thicke lying in bed with a topless model while his arm assumes a dominant position over her body almost completely blocking her from the view of the camera. While this position may be perceived as simply cuddling, in the realms of this music video that reflects…

OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…
