Introduction:
Overall, Fall Semesters Freshman Engineering course, Engineering Graphics and Design 110 deals with the scientific process, which is a highly concentrated methodology focusing on the five-step Engineering Design Process. The five-step Engineering Design Process has been constructed to provide a rigorous, repeatable, formal scientific methodology to engineering problems. These steps are as follows: Define the Problem, Gather Information, Generate Multiple Solutions, Analyze and Select a Solution, and Test and Implement the Solution.
This design process is a basic, structured formula, so to speak, that provides a building-block, additive procedure for projects from ideas to real-life structures and solutions. When designing and

Engineering Design Process in Context:
“Ligaments play an important role in stabilizing and balancing knee joint movement. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries remain a challenge in clinical and experimental settings due to the poor healing potential of ACL injuries.” This introductory sentence, found in the Abstract, sums up the first step of the design process: Defining the Problem. This defines the need for a quicker, more reliable solution to fixing damaged ACLs, instead of the high failure rate commonly seen.
“Recent studies have reported that growth factors can improve patient outcomes after the surgical repair of ACL injuries. Growth factors have been tested for orthopedic treatments such as fracture management, spinal fusion and tendon and ligament healing. Growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) [10], platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) [11] and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) [12], show the most promising results for healing ACL injuries [13]. Biochemical factors that can be added to tissue-secreted proteins may offer opportunities to improve ACL injury repair and to promote regeneration in clinical

MGF-C24E is formed when total IGF-1 mRNA contains 6 exons and can be translated into a precursor that cleaves to form the N-terminal peptide named mature IGF-1, and a C-terminal fragment named E-peptide. IGF-1 splice variants of exon 4 spliced to exon 5 or exon 6 are named MGF or IGF-IEc in humans and IGF-IEb in rodents [15], [16] and [17].” This section, located towards the end of the Introduction, represents a section of other studies that have the same objectives as the Mechano Growth Factor has. This shows that there have been Multiple Solutions Generated to fix the healing process of the ACL

A 30-year-old skier takes a sharp turn on the slopes and hears a dreaded “pop” in his right knee. He has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)—a band of tissue that’s important for stabilizing the joint. After icing, compressing, and elevating his swollen knee, he visits the doctor. Now it’s time to decide on treatment. If he’s an elite athlete or has additional knee damage, the choice is fairly clear: reconstructive surgery to replace the ACL, plus intense physical therapy.…

    • After a five-year follow-up of the patients that went through ACL reconstruction (allograft versus autograft) both groups had similar outcomes. The results presented that allograft patients perceived less pain at 1 and 6 weeks after surgery, better function at 1 week, 3 months, and 1 year, as well as fewer activity limitations. Summary of Key Evidence: 1. Study design—Prospective Comparative Case Series 2. Sample—A group of 41 patients who underwent soft-tissue allograft reconstruction averaging 29.7 years of age and a group of 118 patients who underwent autograft bone-patellar tendon-bone reconstruction averaging 25.4 years of age.…

For example, in football or soccer, a player plants his or her leg, slows down quickly, and cuts into a different direction. Depending on the direction of the cut, this sudden stop and twist of the knee can put too much stress on the ACL and cause it to tear (Slowik 2). While it is possible to tear an ACL in a non-contact sport, most ACL that are torn during sports occur while playing a contact sport. “One study showed that contact resulted in 93% of injuries in a ground of 226 patients while non-contact sport resulted in the remaining 7%” (Curran, Kum, Tanyu, Wyatt 1). The other risk factor for ACL tears is gender.…

Athletes are fully aware of the physical hardship any sport can have on the human body. The hours of extensive training cannot prevent an injury. Repetitive stress or a blunt trauma to the elbow can damage the Ulna Collateral Ligament (UCL) requiring surgery. The reconstructive surgery, named after Tommy John a major league pitcher, repairs the damaged ligament. The demanding procedure requires the skill of a highly professional orthopedic surgeon.…

Holding these bones together and providing movement and stability are the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL), the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) (“Knee Anatomy”). The top of the tibia is also covered by menisci acting mainly as shock absorbers (“Knee Anatomy”). As Cowl turned sharply to avoid being tackled, he felt a pop in his right knee. Following Cowl’s injury, an anterior drawer test, a Lachman test, and a pivot shift test were all performed. Through these tests, the trainer confirmed his suspicion of an ACL tear to the right knee.…

There is a controversy over ACL reconstruction techniques. On the one hand, doctors argue that the patellar tendon autograft is the best technique. On the other hand, they argue that the hamstring autograft is the best technique. I believe that the best technique depends on the patient and their activity levels. People who compete in sports at a higher level than high school or college for four years would benefit more from a patellar tendon graft.…

Research by Hambly and Griva (2010) attempted to assess how well the IKDC and KOOS measure symptoms and disabilities important to post-ACL reconstructed patients by having subjects complete a survey. Subjects for this study were recruited from the knee guru website, which is an online forum for patients with different types of knee pathologies. Inclusion criterion was set as initial ACL reconstruction. Subjects who underwent revisions or had multiple ligament repairs were excluded from the study. The sample size was compromised of 126 subjects, consisting of 61 males and 65 females.…

Return to soccer following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are among the most common injuries of lower limb in soccer. The touchstone for treatment of ACL tear is surgical reconstruction, which may overcome functional instability of knee joint, thereby lowering the risk of subsequent damage to articular cartilage and menisci. However, there is lacking clear criteria when deciding with players aiming for return to competitive games after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) surgery. Several disparities related to the player “return to play” remain controversy. For example, how should “return to play” be distinguished exactly?…

ACL injuries are of the most intriguing sports injuries today due to their causes, recovery path, prevention methods, and how the injury has progressed in technology. The ACL is the center of much responsibility when it comes to the knee. The ACL runs across the knee joint, and keeps the shin from sliding forward, and provides stability when performing rotational movements. It is one of the many ligaments that holds the knee joint in place, and keeps the knee from buckling.…

Discussion: The patient in this case study was a perfect candidate for an ACL repair with hamstring autograft because of the injury sustained to her ACL ligament. Doctor Rains acknowledged that two-thirds on the patella tendon can be used and has better results but chose to do a hamstring autograft. He based the decision on the age of the patient. Most studies done on patella tendon graft vs hamstring tendon grafts are done on an older population.…
