The First Estate consisted of the archbishops, bishops, and abbots, the Second Estate consisted of the nobles, and the third estate consisted of the bourgeoisies, urban lower classes, and the peasant farmers. All three estates had meetings of the Estates General, yet the Third Estate was always out voted by the First and Second Estate. In 1789, the Third Estate fiercely requested a meeting of the Estates General. As expected the king proclaimed that all three estates follow in the old rules. The Third Estate knew they could easily outvote the other two estates 610 to 591. They resulted in following a pamphlet known as Abbé Sieyès, which caused the Third Estate to change their name into the National Assembly. As the National Assembly, the deputies ended the absolute monarchy, which thus began the new representative government. This governmental change was the first act of the revolution. The French Revolution is a result of the mixture of the bankruptcy of France, the inequality of the Estates, and the slaughtering of the Bastille. Rousseau’s idea of ruling by “General Will” gave citizens the idea that they have power in government. The Third Estate took this idea and made the absolute monarchy into a republic. Louis was so bankrupt he could not recover from the rebellions of the commoners. His marriage with Marie Antoinette never helped his situation because of her constant need for expensive dresses. Leaving the poor with nothing to eat left the people no choice but to riot for bread prices to lower. As the riots grew towards Bastille, they stole its gunpowder to defend themselves. The fall of the Bastille lead to a decrease in Louis’ military and political power. As Louis fell the National Assembly grew allowing the French Revolution to launch
