This caused for the British to tax the colonists as well as their own people back in Europe in order to pay off their debt that was left from the war. They passed a variety of acts that angered the colonists as well as the people in Europe. The British were taxing their own people who were not as prosperous as the colonist and when they noticed that, the British then decided to tax the american colonists. They passed the acts that taxed the colonists which were the molasses act, which is also known as the sugar act, the revenue act, stamp act among others. For example, the Stamp Act taxed the colonists for any paper documents which varied from newspapers to marriage licenses, to anything that was printed, or publicated which strongly angered the colonists. Without the stamp the colonists papers weren’t verified and they could be fined or often put in jail. For the Molasses Act, also known as the revenue act and sugar act, the British taxed for sugar which also helped pay off the war debt. This act led to the colonists buying the sugar from smugglers. In order for them to stop smuggling they taxed less for sugar and made it easier to put the smugglers in jail. The stamp act which was an act passed to tax the colonists was seen as the act that was taking away the freedoms and liberties of the colonists. According to Document H it can be inferred that the colonists were unhappy about the stamp act because the price of the stamps killed them financially. The Print shows the masthead for The Pennsylvania Journal and Weekly Advertiser with a skull and crossbones representing the official stamp required by the act. In the sides you can see a phrase that says “Adieu Adieu to LIBERTY” which can mean that they were saying goodbye to their freedom. Later on according to Rev. Thomas Barnard, the colonists were beginning to experience the liberties they had. He also tells the colonists to be glad and rejoice that the French and Indian War is over and they finally have that liberty to be free.
