Fremont High School by Jonathan Kozol In Jonathan Kozol’s report titled “Fremont High School” he discusses many things he observed when visiting the school in Los Angeles, California. He starts off by giving basic information about the school such as “...enrolls almost 5,000 students on a three-track schedule, with about 83,300 in attendance at any given time.” but as he continues he discusses the many problems the school faces. In his text he discusses a variety of things that are wrong about the school such as the number of students that drop out rate, how crowded the classrooms are, how difficult simple things such as lunch and using the restroom are at the school and etc.…

Reading is the foundation of everything “Whether you want to be a reading teacher or not you’re going to be one” says Patty Wagenknecht. She was a language arts teacher for 30 years after that she was on the School Board for 12 years. Patty says she was all over the Pettis county school district, at one point she was in charge of going around making sure that all the teachers had everything they needed to teach appropriately. She would go every summer to find some sort of class or seminar to further her education and get up to date information. “You never really have a summer”…

Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience on how the decline in our American arts, specifically literacy, has caused many negative impacts to individuals that don't read regularly. Dana Gioia's paper has informed his audience of young adults, over the importance of literature, and how it helps in social aspects, but most importantly being “advanced” in literature is very “significant in the business world”. A major claim that Dana Gioia mentions in his article, is that “38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension”. This only supports his view on how our society is quickly losing an “advanced literacy skill”, that could help anyone in any “educational, cultural and economic factors”.…

“Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” from Haas & Flowers wants us to understand the true meaning of reading and writing, how we need to see reading as a “constructive rather than a receptive process” (Haas & Flower 167). Targeting students and teachers as well, Haas and Flower managed to develop an article that explains and shows us some misconception of our daily writing life that should be known by everybody. They make questions towards students asking if they really gather all the information that is available in the articles, and if they are available to print them on their writings. Some of the students use a strategy called “rhetorical reading” to get the most out of the texts but only experienced readers managed to use this skill as supposed to. Freshman readers and experienced readers are mentioned and evaluated with the same article, comparing their results, Haas & Flower observed that experienced readers could get more juice out of the readings due to the experience and the previous knowledge in the area.…

Reading is such a focal part of my life that I sometimes lose sight of the fact that many people can't do it. Aside from the more practical and obvious benefits of a more literate society, those who can read and write suddenly have a way to change their lives and their world. Literacy is a prerequisite to an education, and receiving an education is a way for those living in poverty to change their…

What studies are necessary in order to create a functioning and prosperous society? Clearly, there is an emphasis on STEAM related fields, since those lead to well paying work opportunities, but we should not forget the value of critical thinking. There is no better way to enforce our STEAM educational goals than with introducing SF as an elective for students to take in conjunction with their studies. SF has the unique opportunity of entertaining through fiction, but also lends scientific insights which will reinforce the learning of students.…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…

My Road to Reading and Writing As Mark Twain said, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read”. Many people today don’t take up reading or writing as a hobby. A lot of people would not even read a book for entertainment or to expand their knowledge and the most they write is a post on social media. In my opinion, most people know how to read but chose not to because they are uninterested or unwilling which causes them no to be as proficient in writing.…

The effects that illiteracy has range from embarrassment to low self-esteem as well as high crime rates. Illiteracy seems to have an even more devastating effect in the lower income communities. Based on that, Johnathan Kozol wrote “The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society,” that was an article in Illiterate America (1985) to show how illiteracy lowers people’s quality of life, reduce the education, and prevents them take part in democratic society fully. Negative effects of illiteracy in America are also heavy in politics. One has to wonder how someone who cannot read or write manages to vote.…
