Reflection On The Freire Engagement

The Freire Engagement Assignment performed in class the week of May 30th was, in my opinion, an exceptional introductory activity that helped facilitate class discussion as well as some level of reflection about the course materials and subject matter. For this activity, students were to think about the words “difference” and “diversity” and then write out a list of words they associated with these terms. Then, they were to pick five words on their list that they found particularly important and write them on the white board at the front of the room. When this was complete, students were to review the words on the board, determine a means of categorizing them, and then discuss their categories they made with another student and then with the rest of the class. Something I was able to glean from this activity related to how people think about difference and diversity. Difference describes the ways in which something or someone may be unlike me …show more content…
While it seems so commonplace within education, this activity and the succeeding discussions in class have caused me to view social studies under a different lens that I feel provides me with a better understanding of what the topic truly covers. To state it simply, I believe that social studies describes the study of human beings and how they function within society. It seeks to understand the human condition through the lenses of human interaction, cultural trends, and events in history among other factors that influence society. To me, this is important because it provides explanation as to why certain practices or social issues like racism, sexism, and homophobia exist within society. And if we are able to better our understanding of what motivates these issues, it can become easier to determine the best way to rectify and even eradicate

Would it not be great to be able to prevent conflict altogether? Not having to resolve any disputes, or differences, and having complete harmony. It would be amazing; however, conflict is part of life. We may not be able to prevent it all the time, but we can be prepared to resolve it in the best manner possible. Authors, Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson, share their knowledge in their book titled, Resolving everyday conflict, providing a Christian view on conflict resolution (Sande & Johnson, 2011).…

Diversity among Civilizations Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a science fiction story that communicates lessons of new technological advances that could be developed in the future and some of the outcomes these advancements can cause. The passage Harrison Bergeron is a story of the future that tells about several people who live in a civilization that is affected with an invention that is known as the handicap. George is a human that acceptingly has a mental handicap, but others, such as Harrison, have the handicaps and despise them. Eventually, Harrison removes his handicaps to rebel against the government, but he is killed before he could cause any harm. Vonnegut particularly expressed a theme into his science fiction passage…

Diversity is a key element for a proper learning environment; students must be amongst people of other backgrounds to be exposed to the variation in the real world. In the scientific community, collaboration with others is necessary, and often, they come from an alternate way of life. Working with someone who may be different in many ways has numerous benefits; they may be able to propose ideas that you had not previously considered, or they could inform you of something that has the potential to assist you later in life. Living in a diverse setting not only an educational benefit, but it also aids in the preparation for the real world. We live in an extremely diverse location, with people immigrating from various places around the world.…

Description of the content This course will provide participants with techniques and skills to enhance their knowledge and skillset related to diversity training. Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

We can often get an entirely different view of the world just by talking to people whose backgrounds lead them to see vistas different from our own” (697). In the essay “unexpected Vistas by James Trefil” it was shown that background and knowledge create unique opinions (696). The essay gives insight on how one of a kind vistas create diversity, connection, and purpose. Every person has a different “intellectual vista” depending on their experience and “The property that each person … can see something entirely different” is what creates diversity in our world (696). Being exposed to new ideas create a “wide-ranging view” of our surroundings (697).…

As far as american history and civil rights goes, the education system should not teach us that black and white racism was the only issue at the time. In fact, schools managed to ignore the civil rights struggle involving Mexican Americans, Asians, LGBT community etc. I became heavily interested in this topic my first semester here at state once I took a latino studies course where we touched bases on the Chicano movement that occurred in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Growing up Chicano this issue and movement hit home and intrigued me a great deal considering in school I 've only ever learned about black and white racism during the civil rights movement. This topic should be further explored considering all throughout our years in school we are forced…

When considering the human race, finding something to unite us all could be a welcome gift. If the goal is unity, French anthropologist Louis Dumont says this: The oneness of the human species, however, does not demand the arbitrary reduction of diversity to unity- it only demands that it should be possible to pass from one particularity to another, and that no effort should be spared in order to elaborate a common language in which each particularity can be adequately described. The first step to that end consists in recognizing differences.…

One’s sociological imagination will vary from person to person as it is partially based off his or her experiences. In more simplistic terms it can be depicted as one’s ability to connect his or her own particular problems and relate them back to a more social level that others may have in common. The sociological imagination is a very interesting yet complex component in one’s life. It is a real eye opener. There are many aspects one’s sociological imagination can touch upon such as social class and inequality, gender, culture and socialization, deviance and criminality, etc.…

Taking pieces of each one and making a new philosophy of education that encumpasses our growing technological world. Between the five philosophies, perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, existentialism, and social reconstructivism, I relate most to John Dewey 's progressivism teaching philosophy.
