The first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” (“First Amendment”) Opposing parties believe the government is nothing but a tradition and some people use government for their own advantage, Henry David Thoreau is one individual that believes people to need to stand up for the truth and voice their opinions. Thoreau states, “That government is best which governs not at all.” He believed that just because something may be the majority does not mean it is always the best. (“Civil Disobedience”)

The U.S flag is the symbol of freedom many die to defend, men and women lay their lives down everyday to protect and serve our country. “By flying the Honor and Remember Flag, we say to these selfless men and women and the families that love them, that we as Americans will never forget their contribution to our freedom.” (“Honor and Remembrance”) What it means to veterans “Somewhere in this country, every moment, it is significant to someone,” Bratten said as he referred to Old Glory. “To the world, the flag is our promise that we will continue to strive for these ideals. To us, the flag is a reminder both that the struggle for liberty and equality is unceasing, and that our obligation of tolerance and respect for all or our fellow citizens encompasses those who disagree with us - indeed, even those whose ideas are disagreeable or offensive.” (Chief Justice Rehnquist) In the Civil War alone 498,332 men and women died for our country, and in all U.S wars more than 1.1 million Americans were killed.
