When conducting research there are four worldviews that allow researchers to investigate their topic of interest from varying perspectives. Each worldview contains specific ontological, epistemological, and methodological characteristics that encompass them, as well as a preferred strategy of inquiry to retrieve the necessary data. Atkinson (2012) defines ontology as “ a special branch of philosophy pertaining to central metaphysical questions about the world” (p. 156). This translates to how individuals perceive reality and answers the question of what the nature of reality truly is.
