Phileo is the love between friends. Romeo has many friends in the play, but his greatest friend is likely Mercutio. Mercutio always makes Romeo laugh and is there for him whenever he needs him no matter what. On Monday, late afternoon, Tybalt enters a public place trying to find Romeo. When Romeo enters, Tybalt challenges him but Mercutio intervenes and requests, “Alla stoccata carries it away. [Draws.]/ Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk with me?” (3.1.73-74). What Mercutio is trying to say when he says the Italian term Alla stoccata, is that Tybalt is a skilled fencer and Romeo is no match for him. Mercutio decides to fight on Romeo’s behalf and defends him because he is his best friend and knows he will die if he fights Tybalt. He dies for Romeo soon after. Benvolio then tells Romeo, “O Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio’s dead!” (3.1.115). Saying he must avenge Mercutio. Romeo does as Benvolio tells him and chases after Tybalt then kills him. Romeo does this out of revenge and love for his dead best friend. This is important to the plot and character development of Romeo because it affects his feelings and next actions. If it was not for Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship, Romeo would have likely died and the story would not have been able to continue
