Diane Baumrind identified four different types of parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and rejecting/neglecting/uninvolved parents. Authoritative parenting style is characterized by parents that are loving, set clear rules, and assist their children through the thought process behind their consequences. Authoritarian parents are described as indifferent, controlling, and strict. Authoritarian parents love their children, although they are not openly affectionate. Permissive parenting style are described as affectionate, however they do not have clear rules and expectations for their children. Another pro of labeling students is that it will give the parents an opportunity to connect with other parents of students with the same label or a similar label. This sense of community will help the parent be successful.
A final pro of labeling students is that teachers will be able to use the label as a guideline for differentiating instruction. If the teacher is aware that the student has a learning disability, they can ensure that appropriate instruction is provided. Cons A con of labeling students is that some ineffective teachers may use it as an excuse to dismiss the student and not teach them to their full ability.
In my experience, I have seen students mislabeled by well meaning adults in the education field. They may have given into a parent demand and given the student a label that was not indicative of the student’s true deficits. A final con of labeling students is that as the student ages and becomes aware of the label they may use it as an excuse to not work or continue to make
