The Four Main Characters In Everyday Use By Alice Walker

There are 4 main characters in the story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. Mama, Maggie, Dee, and Hakin-a-barber. Mama describes herself as a big-boned woman with hands that are rough from years of hard work. She has played the part as a single mother to both her daughters. Mama is poor and uneducated. Maggie is very shy and lacks self-confidence. She is good-hearted, caring, and well-behaved. The first-born daughter Dee, renamed herself Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. Dee wears a brightly colored, yellow-and-orange, full-length dress that is unsuitable for the warm weather. Dee is educated, sophisticated, and extremely strong-minded. Hakim-a-barber is Dee’s boyfriend. He is a short and chunky Black Muslim. He has hair down to his waist with a bushy beard. His has a longing to make a good first impression. Elisa is a hard worker, who keeps her house clean, and her garden beautiful. She feels stuck, underappreciated, and unsatisfied with life. The Tinker is a tall, bearded man who makes his living fixing kitchen utensils. The tinker is a smart person and a delightful salesman. Henry is Elisa’s husband. Henry is a nice man. He loves his wife but doesn’t really understand and appreciate her. Still, he is an adequate businessman who runs his farm successfully and provides a comfortable life for his wife. Elisa is the dynamic character, because she goes under a change from her experience in the story. This change is that she may not be too trusting to strangers, because she trusted the man to give the woman down the road the Chrysanthemums. Then at the end of the story Elisa realizes that the flowers were tossed to the side of the road. Elisa can also be considered a round character.
