The Civil War took place in the United States from April 12, 1861 through May 9, 1865. The War was between the Northern and the South states. Many believe that the war was over slavery in the United States. However, we have discovered that slavery was only a piece of the puzzle. The Civil War was actually fought for several causes. Slavery, political reasons, economic reasons, and states rights were all causes of the Civil War. Therefor, slavery should be known as one of the four main causes of the war and not the sole reason. In the early 19th century, slavery was considered the law of the land in both the North and the South. In the North of 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The cotton gin made it easier for the production of cotton. Since the cotton didn’t take so many people to pick through for the seeds, more cotton was being grown. Due to the increased production of cotton, textile mills in the North were able to grow. Therefor the North who disagreed with slavery were benefiting from the cotton being harvested by the slaves in the South. North turned from slavery and South did not. The south felt that their states rights were being taken away from them by the Northern abolitionists. …show more content…
Abraham Lincoln was president during the Civil War. As president he made several speeches and also signed important documents. Lincoln's goal was to keep the United States together, “preserve the Union”. He refused to recognize the southern states as an independent nation. As a result, the Civil War was started. January 1, 1863 the emancipation proclamation was issued to free slaves in the South. Lincoln was later shot and killed by John Wilkes booth, a southern sympathizer on April 14,
