To discuss the solution to the dilemma presented in the case #4, let me first enumerate and explain the four levels of moral discourse. Based on Veatch (2007), the four levels of moral discourse are the cases, rules and rights (Codes of Ethics), normative ethics and metaethics. This four levels do not follow a particular sequence or pattern. Cases provides the initial pathway of action that is more ethical pathway but not all the time. Under the cases are the paradigm cases which a certain scenario will repeat over and over again. Sometimes physician used paradigm cases to compare past cases which have been successful and apply it to the present similar case. Sometimes paradigm cases are not effective because they were different opinions that may clash. This boy named Yusef Camp,encountered convulsion and collapsed after eating a pickle in a sidewalk. He was rescued to the nearest emergency room. To restore respiration, the emergency room personnel put him on a ventilator, but the boy is still unconscious and he cannot breathe on his own. His brain function was irreversibly destroyed and there was no possibility of recovery which the physicians concluded. The physician might proclaim that the boy is dead and the ventilator will be stop. One of the neurologists assumed that the boy still have a minor brain function that is still intact which is opposed to the two neurologists that he’s brain dead. This is why they cannot proclaim the boy is dead because the brain function loss.
