Persuasion and influence happen all the time among us whether we realize it or not. A simple advertisement at the side of the road is also a form of persuasion which can influence people. A child asking his mother for a toy is also a persuasion. Persuasion itself has different definitions according to different scholars. Plus, persuasion and influence are sometimes interchangeable. According to Richard M. Perloff (2003), in his book The Dynamics of Persuasion, one of the communication scholar stated persuasion as a communication process where the speaker wants and tries to convince their targets to change their attitudes or behaviour about a matter with the transmission of message in an atmosphere of unrestricted choice.
1.1.1 Key Elements of Persuasion
When it comes to persuasion, there are four key elements has been identified. The first one is credibility. This element is created based on trust and expertise, and it also needs to be earned (Brusman, 2010). The difference between persuasion and coercion is that persuasion is simply influencing people with reasons and verbal appeal. While coercion on the other hand, uses force to make people do things against their will (Coon, 2012). The full definition of coercion is a technique for forcing people to do the things the coercer wants, which are against their will (M.Perloff, 2003). Examples of coercion techniques are mind control, brainwashing, force, and torture. These two are commonly confused as they are somewhat similar with one another, in a sense that they are both ways to make people do things for the speaker. Due to fact that they are closely related, some company get confused when it comes to using the correct way of persuading within the company, which leads to this research
