Three books I have read for pleasure are The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and Flight by Sherman Alexie. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao made evident multiple things, one would have to be “that this world there’s somebody who will always love you” meaning no matter what you're going through as a minority get up and be successful because theirs always a person who will always love you. The Four Agreements made evident to me that one's life can drastically turn because of one's words, personality, and/or assumptions. As Ruiz provides us with examples of everyday wrongs and rights guiding the readers from what’s right and wrong. Flight helped me realize that one is able to control their…

This book has taught me so much about how true love never fails no matter what happens. The little things in life matter more than the big things. Also that you should never judge someone by their appearance because they are different inside the things you can’t see with a human naked eye, you have to get to know that person to find the truly special, ideal things inside with the loving warm caring hearts. “People die, but love doesn’t,” I learned that even if people pass away there is still that true love that never escapes the hearts of people that are still here on earth. Just like when Marguerite passed away Eddie still loved her with all his heart and the same goes for Marguerite that even when she was in heaven.…

Introduction Gary B. Nash authored this book, Race and Revolution, to inform people the other side of the story of slavery. Slavery was just not the problem of the African Americans, but also with the whites. He beautifully organized this book with two parts: one section with three chapters and the second section with documents. The first three chapter discussed the different racial problems that revolved around the beginnings and middle events of slavery. Their titles include: Revolutionary Generation Embraces Abolitionism, The Failure of Abolitionism, and Black Americans in a White Republic.…

There were three compromises that shaped the last few details to set forth the Constitution. One of those issues was The Great Compromise of 1787. By far this was the one topic that brought on the most disagreements between the states. As the states tried to come to an agreement the state Connecticut came up with their own plan to the floor, they suggested that representation within the lower house would be done by population, and each state would have an equal vote in the upper house.…

Warriors Don’t Cry really let me see into a time I had an idea about, but never really could understand the real struggles people were facing at this time. The book was very easy to finish because I really wanted to know what would happen next. It grabbed my attention so I would want to keep reading, and I was disappointed when I finished it. The very first time that I read about the terrible situations that Melba went through was when I was hooked on the book.…

We all have families that guide us to discover our identity and background, but does that mean we have to follow through the same traditions? The short story “The Moths” by Helena Viramontes tells the story of a fourteen-year-old who describes herself as unattractive, disrespectful and unlike other girls. Although she is mistreated and abused by her family she has an Abuelita who cares for her. She is then forced to care for her ailing Abuelita who is dying through her last days shaping her to become responsible, and discovers a sequence on how she and her family were raised. The story argues that every individual can obtain rebirth through the discovery of self-belonging, self-reflection, and by spreading affection.…

When I finished reading Treaties: Negotiations and Rights by Tamara Starblanket, the first thing that I thought was that treaty was not going to work. It was not going to work, because when these two nations came together, before they even met, their ideals were different. The Crown thought that they already had sovereignty over their lands and were just granting the Aboriginal Peoples certain rights. The Crown thought that they already had control and rule of the lands. While the Aboriginal Peoples thought that they were meeting and making treaty as two different nations.…

ENC 1102 has deepened my understanding in not only social/political issues such as civil rights and gender equality, but also in writing/research techniques. I learned how to find academic sources that have been peer-reviewed in order to back up my papers with evidence and had facts. I also learned how to connect my thoughts to not only our readings but also real world events that may also back up my argument. All of these techniques will help me better my writing for future classes here at FAU and also in my career of medicine as I will be writing quite a lot of academic papers. This semester my favorite writing/reading assignment was “Why Nice Guys Finish Last” by Julia Serano.…

The allegory implied that there is a difference between appearance and reality. I believe that this is true because what the prisoners saw in the cave was different than what they saw when the prisoner escaped and had the chance to go outside. For example, in the story, the fire did not look like one till the prisoner went outside and realized it was a fire. In the cave the prisoners were shackled to a wall and could not move or turn their head so what was in the cave was all they had known.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…
