Special education encompasses those children that need more assistance than their peers who develop at a more predictable rate. Being an effective teacher means assisting students in reaching their highest potential. To attain that goal a safe and engaging atmosphere is required to help students develop emotionally, intellectually, and socially. In order to create such an environment I believe there are a few elements that must be present, which include; a self-aware teacher, high expectations, allowing a student’s natural curiosity to direct their learning, and emphasizing the importance of utilizing Least Restrictive Environment.
When it comes to teaching style, classroom management, and design of curriculum I lie somewhere between the theories of progressivism and essentialism. In an attempt to work well with all students I try to be as versatile as possible. I hold individualism in high regards, but also believe that students need to obtain a basic skill set in order to function and excel in society.
As a teacher, the most important thing I can do to create an inviting and engaging learning environment is to be self-aware and strive for personal development. Self-awareness means that I am able to identify my own strengths, areas in need of potential improvement, as well as my…
