In the United States there are 397,122 children in the foster care system and while most foster “parents” do all they can for these children others do less than what is needed of these children. Statistics show that if nothing changes by the year 2020 more than 22,500 children will have been abused or mistreated in the foster care system. More often than not the foster system does more harm than help. Most foster children are abused, moved around way too much, and continuously in pain due to loss of friends, family, and homes. No questions asked and most often were placed in poor situations, badly abused, and greatly mistreated. These “parents” were paid by the state to take these children and had no guidelines for the care of these children (Hamilton 6). These children could be abused, starved or put into slavery at the whim of these “parents”. There was at this point only a disgusting reality for these kids, that no one would take them and give them a true home. In the late 1800’s a man by the name of Charles Loring Brace started what he called a free foster movement. He was the minister of the New York Children 's Aid Society, he made a plan to give every orphaned child a “home”, but the children could be used for whatever they were needed of. The plan for those children who were not wanted was to board them with women hired by the church, which were given money to care for these children, and then they were to take care of them until they were of age to care for themselves (“History of Foster Care” 8). A child that has been on depression medication, ADHD or ADD meds their entire lives may become independent of these meds, this is a problem that the system must also be looking out for (Fixing Foster Care 1) . Many people wonder why there are so many addicts out there. It may very well be the adults in their life’s fault for over medicating these children at a young age where they can 't function without it. Even if it is the best option at the time “parents” shouldn’t allow them to be on it for a long period of time (Fixing Foster Care 1) . A child will not know what to do with themselves once they become adults and are able to care for themselves. They will be independent of them and not know how to be without them.
