The Forrester Character Analysis

Our personality can reflect in our actions, words, surroundings and even our inaction. One can piece together a person's background via their personality, for humans this is second nature. When the movie first shows us Jamal and his room you can tell what kind of person he is, as it shows us piles of books, a basketball and the quality of his living conditions tells us things like income. Same for Forrester you see a man who's rumored not to leave his home and watches people from his window, you immediately think he is a crazy hermit. Jamal Wallace is a precocious 16 year old boy, he is able to read and write at a level few can, and can play basketball that no one can match. He was a writer but no one wanted to publish his book, so instead of writing another, he quit writing and became an English professor. Forrester mentions that this can either make either a good or bad teacher. Robert's portrayed to be a bad teacher as he kicks students out if they talk back, he also threatens, challenges and puts down Jamal. He views Jamal kind of like a fraud as he doesn’t think he can write the way he does. Crawford also holds Forrester in rather high regard. He is the antagonist and handles the majority of the conflicts in the story due to his personality and defensive nature. The ability to learn traits, see patterns and make connections is what people do when we see people both in real life and in movies. You can detect in the opening that Jamal is poor, likes basketball and reads and writes. You see William Forrester and think that he's introverted, likes reading and dislikes people. You can tell that Robert Crawford is bitter, volatile and has a disliking for Jamal. These three personalities clash to create a conflict that's the center of the
