According to Max Weber, bureaucracy can be termed as the formal system of an organization and administration designed to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. In line with this, there are principles that can be used in such an organizational structure. These principles include job specialization (Altman 2013). In this case, management of an organization is charged with ensuring that they divide their jobs into a simple, routine and fixed category based on competence and functional specialization. In the case of Xerox, Mulcahy was able to implement this by ensuring managers, employees and customers played their roles accordingly.

Organizations in the twenty-first century are flattening hierarchies and empowering teams due to the need for constant innovation and technological advancements that change the ways people do things (Jones, 2012). In this case, Mulcahy was able to flatten Xerox’s management hierarchy and was able to streamline its operating units that consequently reduced the number of employees and cut on management and running costs by twenty-six percent. On the other hand, Mulcahy through the flattening of hierarchy was able to bring in Ursula Burns, who was able to devise a successful turnaround plan to save Xerox and consequently, all employees were committed to working together to contribute towards improved products and …show more content…
The structure tends to increase flexibility, and can be broken down into the product, market, and geographic structures.
In the case of Xerox, the management and engineering team was able to come up with a machine that would be able to combined copying of hardware and software, and create highly customized documents which is what most customers preferred as an addition to their machines. Furthermore, the company was able to customize their products and services depending on the specialized needs according to the needs of customers in each country. Moreover, the company was able to come up with personalized software that would create individual client statements for banks, retail stores, and small businesses.
It is without a doubt that design models and structures play a significant role in organizational development. Some of the effects accrued by this include information sharing and dissemination within an organization.
