Romeo tries to make peace, but fails and Tybalt kills Mercutio. Out of rage, Romeo kills Tybalt and is exiled. Capulet arranges for Paris to marry Juliet on Thursday and asks her mother to inform Juliet of the news. Juliet, who’s already married to Romeo, is devastated and refuses to marry Paris. This is an example of the forcefulness of love because she’s disrespecting her father and her honor. During the 1500s, arranged marriages were very common, and many a time the daughter did not have a choice. It was considered an honor to marry the man your father chose for you, and when Juliet refuses, this shows just how deep her love for Romeo is. Her father was infuriated and declared he’d disown her if she didn’t agree, this is when she decides she’d rather die and tells the nurse she’ll be going to confession. In Act 4, when she arrives to see Friar Lawrence, after a short discussion with Paris, she leads Friar away. She confesses she wishes to die and attempts to stab herself before Friar stops her. She is so in love with Romeo, and distraught over his exile and the arranged marriage, that she is willing to die. Friar offers her a potion that, once taken, will make her appear dead for 40 hours. She agrees to take the potion and fake her death just to be with
