Narrative Essay On Thanksgiving Break

The anticipation for Thanksgiving break is over the top. The thought of home cooked meals, family, and no professors talking a student 's ear off for a week are heavenly. Of course all the classic thanksgiving things happen but there are also psychological things that go on. (Darn that psychology sneaking its way into everything, it obviously never goes on break.) Although psychology is used every minute of every day i 'm only going to talk about 5 concepts, persuasion, cognition, emotion, personality, and the self. So sit back and get ready to eat some turkey. The first concept i`m going to talk about is persuasion and the techniques that are used along with it. The foot-in-the-door technique is when someone asks a small favor and then after thats agreed to a bigger thing is asked of them and they feel obligated to agree. This happened over break when I asked my parents if we could get a new screen protector they of course agreed it 's an inexpensive piece of plastic they figured. Knowing that my screen was shattered i decided why not just ask if we could get the screen replaced too. I was in shock when my parents started …show more content…
The self includes things like theory of mind, self esteem, self perception, etc.. Over the lovely 5 days off of classes and 9 days at home it was a good self check all around. Am i happy at school, work, and with the friends or choices that i 've made. There were mixed answers as i thought about this the last night home. I needed to work harder on my schoolwork, get rid of the job the manager wasn 't willing to work with my schedule and education comes first for me. The friends that i 've made during this first semester of college are unbelievably supportive. The choices i 've made for the most part have been smart i haven 't done anything crazy yet i just need to focus more on paying attention in lectures and to due

In the research book Influence by Robert Cialdini, the reader learns about several different principles of persuasion. Cialdini explains how they can be applied to everyday life along with how one can make themselves almost immune to the power of influence. The first concept presented is reciprocation. This incompasses the feeling of needing to repay another based on a kind action they did in the past. Another topic that is mentioned is commitment and consistency.…

Thanksgiving is approaching very fast and I’m so ready to go back home. It’s been almost five months since I’ve seen most of my family. When I first arrived at Bethel I loved everything about it, but as time went on I began to become homesick. I can already smell my mom’s red velvet cake and her peach cobbler coming out the oven! As a matter of fact I’m becoming a little hungry just thinking about it!…

It all started that Thanksgiving of 2013. When my Mom, Brother, Sister, Dad, and I went to my nana and papa’s house at a little place called Murphey Court, at Linden Michigan. When my family and I got there, I saw my “Extended” family, My gg (Great Grandma), Conner, James, Aunt Sue, and my Uncle Steve. While my cousins and I were outside my nana was making the cake while my papa, dad, and mum were playing a game called dig dug. On Thanksgiving, people have fun with their family and friends. It’s a day where they share a meal and drink alcohol together. However, in my family, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving because the holidays are different because of our culture. In my country, Dominican Republic celebrates Christmas Eve, which is the same as Thanksgiving, but the food is different compared to the food in America. Christmas Eve is still celebrated on December 24th; the food that the family makes is Pernil, rice, beans, and some wine.…

We need to have some history of Thanksgiving in order to understand why thanksgiving is the way it is and why my family is not fond of the holiday. The Pilgrims, who had buckles on their hats and pants around their ankles, started this holiday we call Thanksgiving. They started it to have something to do on the last Thursday in November since football had not been invented during that time frame. At first, it was just a small gathering of Pilgrims and Indians and the sharing of a small meal around their rickety table. It proceeded to grow until the Pilgrims started shooting Indians.…

The last possible strategy I could use would be the “That’s not all” technique under the reciprocity norm. The “That’s not all” technique is a two step process that offers something of interest or makes a request. Following that request is a deal to influence the targeted person before they can fully make up their mind, causing the person to feel obligated to except the new offer (lecture, 11-3-2016). This feeling of having to accept the new offer is due to the reciprocity norm, the idea of give and take, or in other words, if someone does a favor for you, you return the favor (lecture, 11-3-2016). Researchers were able to prove this theory to be a successful technique for persuading others through the cupcake study.…

Thanksgiving Extra-Credit Assignment My family has never been big on the holidays- I almost always spend them at a friend’s home. This year, I went to my friend Alex’s home for Thanksgiving alongside my friend Jay. Alex and Jay are frankly some of the greatest friends I can ask for, and going in to thank them I knew they would take it light-heartedly and make a joke out of it. Before we sat down for dinner, the three of us were sitting in her living room ranting and cracking jokes.…
