The Football Team: A Short Story

Through all this mess Luc had decided to actually join the football team. Tryouts had been on a Saturday Lexi and Shimmer had gone with him. Monday evening before their first class Luc went to the locker room to check the coach’s board to see if he made the team. Not only had he make the team he was first string offense fullback. And practice was every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, before his evening classes, with games on Saturdays. Being true to their word their parents made Lexi and/or Shimmer attend all practice sessions. At first Lexi complained, but after the second practice she gave up and went along with a smile on her face. Luc thought some of it was because she liked riding on the back of his new motorcycle. Keegan thought it was a good idea for Luc to have his own transportation, with his practice starting before class which meant before the sunset. And Keen needing the car to get to school after the sunset.
They had their first game in two weeks. During their second week of practice Luc was walking into the locker room while Lexi waited outside. “Joe, did you hear about David?” Luc was half listening. “Man he almost got killed coming down off the bluff he was starting down the steepest incline when his breaks went out.” Luc recognized the name David, and asked. “Is he okay?” Eddy turned to

He remembered why the name sounded familiar. David was the guy that fell off the hiking trail near their house last week. Lexi had been there and said it looked bad, but the guy had gotten up and walked away. Luc wondered how the guy could play football, he was so accident prone. David played first string offense guard, he was a big guy, but he could move fast for a guy his size. He was only 6 feet tall compared to Luc’s 6 feet 3 inches; however he was as wide as Luc.
