Football broadcasts are often riddled with stereotypical code labels of white and black players. Even on the biggest stage of the year, the Super Bowl, there often is not any exception to this. This year, we saw the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons battle in Houston for the Lombardi Trophy. Fox was on the call, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman in the booth. Buck was only doing play-by-play, so it was Aikman who was giving these labels to certain players. When talking about white players in the Super Bowl, Troy Aikman often resorted to typical labels. New England wide receivers Chris Hogan and Julian Edelman’s commitment to the team and overall sense of grit were mentioned multiple times. Aikman also pointed out Patriots quarterback and now four time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady’s knowledge of the game and ability to break down the opposing defense. We saw this specifically late in the game, when Brady was in the shadow of his own end zone facing a heavy Falcons pass rush. I’ve been a football fan my entire life and have been watching the game for as long as I can remember. So, when I hear comments describing a white football player as “gritty” or “deceptively fast” or a black one as a “gifted athlete” or “prototype player,” I am almost numb to it; I’m so used to people like Danny Woodhead being labeled as a “North-South” runner that I don’t even think twice about it. With all of these types of comments, there are some truths to it. There’s no denying that Julio Jones is an incredible athlete or that players like Julian Edelman fight for extra yards often. But, these labels don’t have to be the only ones that they’re known for; Jones can make “gritty” plays and Edelman can make physically skilled catches

Early in that game Aaron Rodgers (the quarterback for the Packers) threw a touchdown pass to future Hall of Fame receiver, Donald Driver (Chris Chase). Seconds after the touchdown, Donald Driver ran to the fans and did the signature Lambeau Leap. He looked almost identical to LeRoy Butler in 1993. The crowd was already screaming as loud as they could, but when Donald Driver converted the Lambeau Leap successfully, the stadium absolutely erupted. Later in the third quarter, Christian Ponder (the quarterback for the Vikings) threw a touchdown pass to the Vikings tight end, Kyle Rudolph (Chris Chase).…

In the early to mid 1900’s racism was a problem in the United States of America, where minority groups were treated poorly for being apart of a minority. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people to help abolish segregation, and he was supporting all minorities not just the black people. Remember the Titans took place during this time of segregation. The Titans-football team- was the only team in the state to have black and white americans play together. Coach Boone got rid of segregation on his team by 1 getting the players to get along, 2 he got them to respect each other, and 3 getting them to judge each other on their skill and personality instead of their skin color.…

Poetry allows for writing to reveal transitional work and in this case the transitory connection between internal conflict and the will to grow. Louis Jenkins’s “Football” serves as a model for this effort. While the poem is about football and difficult choices, it disguises as the internal battles of the speaker as well. A notable take is how Jenkins guides the readers’ attention to the speaker and his confusing decisions he presents as a quarterback. Jenkins has the readers unknowingly focus in on the speaker himself and these odd comparisons and disconnecting ideas within his words.…
