In today’s society, there is common definition of democracy. That democracy is where an individual has the right to life, liberty and happiness. That every individual is equal and no one person can take away their rights. That there is one individual in particular that govern the majority but does not over power them and they are hold on accountability. This is concept pf democracy that majority of the people believe and humbly accepts and lives by. But is this only concept of democracy? If so, how was this concept of democracy was able to over power and be prime definition over the others. Public Spiritedness is where citizens show and have interest in public welfare and the good of the community. Public Spiritedness allows a citizen to participate in their community and have a voice in the their government. Pubic Spiritedness is where the citizen leaves selfish and individual intentions behind and lives for the community. The main goal of public spiritedness is to expand the greatest of a government; to be able to create an empowered and evolved and community and government. One theorist that expresses the importance of public spiritedness was Pericles. After the Peloponnesian War and throughout his Funeral Oration speech, he talks to the people of Athens about the importance how the citizens need to have public spiritedness. He also talks to the people about how incredible necessary for them to live the nation, not just themselves. Pericles states, “An Athenian citizen does not neglect the state, because he take care of his household” (Pericles 18). He goes on to describe that a person who does not show any act of action within public, is useless and that all people are the judges of policy. Based on Terrell Carver’s article Ideology: The Career of a Concept he gives a clear-cut definition of ideology. He states that ideology is “agenda of this things to discuss, questions to ask, hypotheses to make. Use it when considering the interaction between ideas and powers, especially systems of ideas that makes claims” (Carver 9). From that definition I can conclude that democracy can be seen as ideology because from all theorists, each one has own set of ideas on what democracy should be and look like. Some theorists were similar to one another and others were entirely different. But they all had one thing in common that their claim and notions on what is a democracy, were all based on ideas they believed in. That’s why I believe democracy can be seen as an ideology, because it not just based one set of ideas but from multiple, which an individual can determine and view in their own
