Furthermore, food in South Africa in nothing like the food I was used to in Rwanda. Most of the food in Rwanda is naturally grown and domestic animals, such as cows, goats and sheep are fed on natural crops. This means that meat is natural and there is no use of chemical fertilizers in order to increase the amount of crop harvest. However, meat in South Africa is got from genetically modified animals and also chemical fertilizers are used to boost crop harvest. I remember the first time I went for lunch on my first day in South Africa, it was my first time to see chicken meat which is three times the normal size of chicken. I knew that it was not going to be any different from the food I used to eat in South African; however, I was expecting more varieties here in the US. After settling into my room, we immediately went to a KFC shop to buy something to eat. Even though some of my friends were surprised by the food, mostly the pizza, chicken and the hamburgers, I was not. It was exactly what I expected, ‘the junk food’ as we call it in my country, Rwanda. Sadly, my friends could not finish it and despite the fact that they did not like it, they were also not used to it. Furthermore, there are other types of food that are found both in the US and South Africa as well, for example, rice, beans, most of the vegetables: carrots, cabbages, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, broccoli, etc. For the most part, many US food companies, such as KFC, Mac Donald’s and others, have a large market in South Africa, and at the same time, some South African food companies export their products to the US. People are always walking with earphones in the ears on the street simply because they want to be in their own world. In the same way as in South Africa, greeting people on the street is rare in the US, even if it is done kindly. For the most part, those who respond do so with a weird kind of a smile (plastic smile), pretending to care. In addition, the American community consists of many people of different race; black, white, Indians, Mexican, Chinese, and others as well as diverse cultures and languages. Unlike in Rwanda, Americans and South African have similar dressing outfits depending on the weather. Since they both experience summer and winter, wearing shorts, trousers, jackets or any other type of cloth for both men and women is the same. In other words, if I was an American going for a holiday in South Africa, I would not feel discriminated against the way I dress. In addition, some university students both here in the US and in South Africa are not that different from high school students socially. I was a shock to see university students wearing shorts and pajamas to class. Nonetheless, I would not blame them since even some professors wear shorts to class. However, in my opinion, I would say that there should be at least an obvious difference between high students and university students in the way they dress and their behaviors as
