The Importance of Lightweight Portable Swamp Mats in Construction

When it comes to breaking ground for new construction projects, there are a number of challenges that present themselves to the project manager. One problem that is common, especially in water saturated areas, is ground that is too saturated and soft to effectively support the maneuver construction equipment. However, soft and sensitive terrain has been conquered through the use of portable swamp mats. Swamp mats are modular pieces that can be connected in order to create a temporary road to allow the movement of vehicles and machinery throughout the construction site, especially those critical work zones that can be difficult to access.

The Importance of Quality
While it is important to control cost, quality must not be sacrificed in the process. One of the most common mistakes that is made in the selection and purchase of swamp mats is to cut costs by choosing a product of inferior quality. There is no substitute for quality, and quality directly impacts performance and longevity. When using swamp mats of inferior quality, it can end up costing the construction company an exorbitant amount of money to replace the mats, as well as repair or replace equipment that was damaged or destroyed due to the malfunction of a swamp mat. It is often the case that the cost associated with the malfunction of low-quality swamp mats will exceed the cost of investing in high quality mats up front.
Swamp mats should be viewed as an investment that will produce a high ROI, based on the level of quality of the mat.
While swamp mats are not a viable alternative for timber crane mats when it comes to side boom equipment movement, they serve well as a primary option for equipment movement and mobility in providing access to critical work

Pitch trusses are one of the most highly favored rooftop designs because they take on the traditional triangular shape of a home. Constructing a rooftop truss involves a great deal of heavy lifting and skill. The quality of the truss rooftop relies heavily on the health of the trusses that are used. Truss bundles that are mishandled prior to installation can result in damaged and destroyed trusses. Therefore, it is important to take note of a few tips you need in order to protect your truss bundles prior to installation.…

    Mudboils In Tully Valley

Discussion: Mudboils cause structural failures since they are suspensions of gravel, clay, silt and fine sand creating an unstable surface. Since the beginning of persistent mudboil activity in the 1970’s, natural landscapes and engineered features have become subject to land-subsidence as mudoils continually deteriorate the areas in their path (Tresohlavy 2003, pp. 27). Petroleum pipeline rerouting, telephone cable burials, and the collapse of bridges have demonstrated the true capabilities of mudboil persistence and destruction (Kappel & McPherson, 1998). These impacts have created a motive for truly solving the problems of mudboils within the Tully Valley. Portions of underground pipeline have become exposed due to the land subsidence issues…

In regards to this week’s discussion, I would like to discuss the lapse in preventative measures that were neglected prior to the event in conjunction with the communication failures discussed by Cooper and Block in chapter 7. Before I discuss the lapse in communicating the dire situation to Secretary Chertoff by Brown, one should note issues in planning, communication, leadership, and unsatisfactory camaraderie amongst department heads were identified far in advance. The emergency response to Hurricane Katrina could have been mitigated via the various long-term warnings presented in our early readings. Poor communication only exacerbated the consequences that ensued, as leadership failed to heed advisory reports, warranted consultation, and exercise input. First, Cooper & Block (2006) annotate the issue of the drainage system for the major canals as poorly engineered with a levee system constructed for cost efficiency rather than structural integrity.…

While winter approaches, arctic cold fronts bring a decrease in temperatures to the prairies and the demand for heat and energy increases. Western Canada derives much of its main source of heating fuel from natural gas. It also leads Canada in the production of natural gas through unconventional well production. Natural Gas or Methane (NH4) left in its organic state, and let migrate in the atmosphere as is the case in the Arctic with the thawing of the tundra, is 20 times more harmful as a greenhouse gas then Carbon Dioxide (CO2). When it is burned Methane is relatively cleaner and is less harmful to the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions than coal and other fossil fuels.…

Impacts of “Kestrel storm diversion pipe” excavation and implementation: The excavation of the channel for the Kestrel storm diversion pipe will result in the temporary removal of habitable land where the channel is dug and around a small area along its length. This is assumed to be from the physical excavated hole, resulting dense and waterlogged soil which is a possible outcome of excavation as well as human presence and construction equipment. Once excavation of the first pipe begins there will be a displacement of small volumes of soil and sediment around each section of pipe. These are to be stored on site and used to fill the hole after the pipe is placed. Any excess is to be collected by trucks and transported elsewhere.…

Crawl Space Encapsulation Water and moisture are constant problems with crawl spaces. If the water/moisture is removed from a crawl space, it may only last a short period of time. Rain will eventually come and re-hydrate the soil, causing new water to collect inside of your crawl space. Luckily, Foundation Medix has a permanent solution to stop water from damaging a crawl space. With crawl space encapsulation we encapsulate the crawl space by covering it with a 20 mil.…

INTRODUCTION Dorton Arena was completed in 1952 and is the first structure to be primarily supported by cables. This feat of civil engineering was visualized by Matthew Nowicki. The entire structure is unique and efficient, and an important component of Dorton Arena is the stability of the roof. The objective of this paper is to address the engineering components of Dorton Arena’s roof that bring the structure to equilibrium. The rest of this paper will focus on the roof’s design, use of tension, attention to displacement of steel, use of guy cables, and integration with the rest of the structure to allow Dorton Arena to find stability in a way that was not previously considered.…
