“American public opinion on the confederate flag remains about where it was 15 years ago, with most describing the flag as a symbol of Southern Pride more than one of racism.” (Agiesta 1) The confederate flag will always be a part of the history in the United States. It has been integrated in the culture for well over a hundred years, and now that all of a sudden a shooting happened everyone wants to blame a flag and remove it based on prejudice or racism. The flag is a symbol of patriots who were trying to protect a country and make sure it remained as the founders of the country intended it to. The reason for the war was never over slavery, but it helped create a reason to start a war. There are many southern families whose great-grandfathers fought in the war and died under it, and for them it is a show or respect, and genuinely has nothing to do with racism. In Louisville, Kentucky there is a cemetery called Cave Hill, where both union and confederate soldiers who fought and died in the war are both laying at rest, some under a confederate flag, and some under the current flag of The United States, but both rest in peace together in one place, rather than divided and separated based on who they were, where they came from, and who fought for what. “The 296-acre cemetery contains thousands of soldiers who fought on both sides.”(Kenning
