To begin with, the reading process is the framework that children follow in order to obtain meaning about and from what they are reading so that they can comprehend it. Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading. The process includes five stages which are: prereading, reading, responding, exploring, and applying. In my classroom we will do all sorts of reading. Sometimes I will be the one reading to the students. This is when I will do my read alouds and shared reading. Sometimes the students will read completely to themselves, or they will have a buddy/group that they read with. In my classroom we will spend a lot of time reading and using print. An activity that I think the students will enjoy is the Reader’s Theatre. This is where your children will really get to show their acting skills! A script that I have planned for them to read is Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester. Reader’s Theatre is great because it will allow the students to practice reading with fluency and expression. Both of which are skills that expert readers have, not to mention it will be downright fun! It is also a great confidence booster. Interactive read alouds are where I will be reading higher level picture books to the student in order to expose them to rich vocabulary and model for them all the skill and strategies that expert readers use. This year I will work with your children to familiarize them will multiple types of texts and media. We will read picture books, poems, informational books, and watch educational media. We all know that kids now days love technology, so I want to expose them to digital print as well. All of these will be appropriate for first grade of …show more content…
This is where it all comes together. One of my favorite projects that I have planned is for when we read fairytales. I will have them color and create fairytale maps. I will create a coloring page of different locations or characters from a fairytale that I read to them in class. Each time we read about a location or a character I will have the students color it on their coloring page. After we have read and their coloring page is complete, I then will charge them with the task of recreating the story on construction page. To do this, we will cut out the pictures from the coloring page and then they must recreate the story on their map by gluing down the pictures of locations and characters as they appeared in the
