There are 100 trillion cells in the average human. Every organism is made up of cells, but only certain cells undergo either Mitosis or Meiosis which are types of cell division. It is vital for organisms to have these processes so that they can grow, heal, and reproduce. Although Mitosis and Meiosis are types of cell division, they have different processes and occur in different organisms. Cell division is where DNA copies itself so that there are two copies so that when there can be another cell with DNA. During Mitosis the cell goes through 5 stages: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase. Interphase has 3 stages: Gap 1, Synthesis Phase, and Gap 2. During Gap 1 the cell grows in size which leads to the Synthesis phase where the jumbled up DNA is replicated.Gap 2 results in the cell growing even more. Prophase is where the disorganized DNA condenses into chromosomes. Also organelles called Centrioles form, and make microtubules or spindle fibers (Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics University of Arizona). According to J. Richard McIntosh and Michael P. Mitosis is present in humans and is responsible for healing and growth. ASU School of Life Sciences point out that, “when someone skins their knee, cells divide to replace old, dead, or damaged cells. Cells also divide so living things can grow” ( ASU School of Life Sciences). This serve as a protection to keep pathogens from being able to freely enter the enter body. Meiosis creates sperm and egg cells which are called gametes (Manfred Schwab 230). Sexual reproduction is where the sperm from a male and an egg from a female meet to create a new life. Mitosis happens when the two haploid cells meet to multiply number normal cells. Prokaryotes only perform Mitosis and Binary Fission since they do not have sex
