These pressures were hard to overcome in the areas of academic grades and specific household rules to follow. Over time the pressures led me to the military way of life, which added even more rules to follow. My parents strongly believed children needed a strict avenue to follow like school athletics or hard work ethic to keep us involved, so we didn’t get in trouble. This cultural custom instilled in us was to elevate our status or stature. During my younger years my health was excellent, but over time cholesterol, hypertension, and back issues a cured. The pressures within my culture lies in the Purnell model of cultural competence in areas like organization, nutrition, high-risk behaviors and heritage. My culture projected problems due to social status, education, goals and priorities, nutrition deficiencies, alcohol and so on. I have learned over the years that social issues in my culture were swept under the rug to cope with everyday society. These deficiencies impact our health over time in areas of cardiovascular disease and mental health. The pressures or stressors within my culture developed these issues due to lack of coping mechanisms. We were taught to go to the doctor only when we needed to for illnesses. Our culture made us to not take kindly to unorthodox medicines or treatment such as Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) like Chiropractic, Meditation, and or Naturopathy. We were brought up going to the doctor was not a good experience at all. Earlier in my life doctors were family practitioner’s that the whole family knew and trusted. Overtime, family doctors changed like socks. The problem raised a question, “Why do we have to explain our family history and health issues every time you see the doctor?” The probability of you missing something important regarding your health needs are very good. Now of day’s people have to bring in a letter and current shot records before talking to your doctor. My culture over the years
