The Five Second Rule

Decent Essays
Someone once taught me something known as the five second rule. If you are unaware of what this technique is, it’s were someone counts to five and does whatever they were too nervous or scared to do previously. First off, I am a really naturally shy person when it comes to raising my hand in class if I know the answer to a question, saying hello to someone new in a class or in the hall, or simply trying to give a presentation in front of the class. Being shy has ruined my confidence levels in myself at times because it makes me second guess everything I do when it comes to answering questions on a test, saying my answer when the teacher calls on me and even talking to my family sometimes because I know if I don’t word my sentences right or

Never Give Up I have faced much adversity in my life. The one time in my life where I feel I have faced the most adversity, was in basketball. This podcast discusses the 14-day rule which was set 30 years ago by a man named Leroy who had recently graduated as a doctorate in ethics from Yale University. He points out three potential sides, one who thinks no research should be done at all, one that thinks it should be allowed up to 8 weeks where the fetus could have a reflex response to a stimulus, and one that thinks that research on an embryo could take place up to 14-days. The reason for 14-days is that this is how long it takes for the embryo to reach “The Primitive Streak” which is when an embryo gains its biological identity or when it begins to “organize itself.” The committee decided to take Leroy’s suggestion and say all research on human embryos has to be stopped at 14-days.…

When asked to define myself in one paper, I find it hard to show the details that I want to in the right light. When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

One of the best things to help me, which happened to be this school year, was my effective speaking class. I went into the class with the I just need to get this over with attitude, but I had an excellent instructor that made me feel very comfortable. One other thing I have not mastered is asking for…

However, I personally felt nervous as I was talking. This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
