We are all connected, everything that we do affects not only ourselves but the people around us. In the book, The Blue Man teaches Eddie this lesson by bringing Eddie back to one of his childhood memories. Back in the war, the Captain had shot Eddie in the knee, which crippled him for the rest of his life. After letting Eddie calm down, the Captain tells Eddie how he was trying to run into a fire to save someone. The Captain realized that this would be an instant death sentence for Eddie and sacrificed his knee to save his life. This split-second decision saved Eddie’s life but incapacitated him for the rest of his life. The connection that I noticed when reading this chapter was to the movie, “127 Hours”. In the movie the main character, Aron Ralston gets pinned by a boulder he knocked loose during his descent of Blue John Canyon. After trying various methods of freeing himself, Aron realizes the only way he will survive is if he amputates his arm. After freeing himself Aron goes on to live a happy life, but only because of the sacrifice that he made that fateful day. Although sacrifice is vital to understand, all of the lessons Eddie learned are necessary to living our best
