Personal Reflection: The Five Group Meetings

Improved Essays
The five group meetings before the hike were meant to help us prepare to work together to complete the hike. During these meetings all of our group members got along together fine. We were not a cohesive group yet but we did not have any big problems that arose. The activities helped with creating group cohesiveness to prepare us for the hike. Doing the small activities gave us a common goal to work on together to prepare us for the main activity, the hike. Based on how the group activities went I thought that there would be two people who would try to take over, make all of the decisions, and not care about what other people wanted or thought. My perception was different compared to my experience. My group was motivated by the ultimate goal …show more content…
Chi got cramps during our hike over the mountain to the second checkpoint and we had to stop every so often to wait for her. However, our group did not get that frustrated. We all were calm and waited for her, and we even encouraged her to keep coming. This incident did slow us down a bit but we continued to keep a happy environment and were able to keep going without any tempers. On our way to the third checkpoint, Scott asked us what we were all doing after the hike. One member had to go to practice but the rest of us had to no plans and Scott asked if we wanted to go to OIP to eat. While we ended up not all going together, mostly because of how tired everyone was, this goes to show how far we came together as a group. We became close and liked each other enough during the hike to want to continue to do something together after the hike as well. Which is saying a lot compared to other groups that I talked to and they complained lot about some of their members. I would say that the level of my groups cohesiveness, especially compared to other groups, was relatively high and this helped us complete the …show more content…
The goal setting theory played a huge part in our hike experience. The ultimate goal was to finish the hike and we all assumed that everyone agreed with this and was motivated to do so. This was not a commitment that we had explicitly talked about before the hike but we all assumed that we were all committed to the goal of completing the hike. This was a challenging goal for us and it was easy to focus on because that was the only thing we had to do that day. Since I assumed and believed that everyone was just as committed as myself this made me more determined to continue and complete the hike because I did not want to be the weak person in the group. Everyone wanted to complete this goal as fast as we could but the ultimate goal was just to finish it. It was expected that everyone put in the most effort and dedication to the hike and we all did. We all were intent on making the best decisions and reaching the final checkpoint. Throughout the hike we would give each other encouraging comments. People would say, “You’re doing well!” and “keep it up” which helped to get some feedback when I really thought I could not walk another step. This was motivating to hear feedback and get tips from other group members. While a lot of the motivation came from within the extrinsic factors such as the group members also played a huge part as well in motivating

During this trek I was crew leader, and as crew leader I solved problems that our crew encountered. Our crew at the beginning of the trek was split almost evenly into two groups, one part wanted to just hike to the next campsite each day and stay there while the other part wanted to do each activity associated to each campsite. To find a solution to this problem I asked the group to talk the first night when we had the time to do so. During the discussion we had, we discovered the goals of each group. After we found the goals I asked the group to come up with a couple solutions.…

Well, approximately five minutes before it was our turn to facilitate our exercise, feeling a little anxious about how it was going to go, Caleb decided to switch it up at the last moment to a puzzle game named “9 Dot Puzzle.” Since he has completed the exercise before, he felt that it would provide more of a conflict resolution style outcome unlike our first activity. Emily and I did not mind that he wanted to change it, then again on such short notice we decided to let him take the lead when it came to facilitating because we didn’t have too much time to go over it before it was our turn. I personally believe if Spencer was there we would have done the first activity because the original plan was his in the first place and he would have been…

We saw Laudi and Will which was nice because the group had already felt different when they were gone. It was definitely a lot more quieter not having Will around. Laudi’s foot appeared to have gotten worse, which didn’t worry the leaders too much since they were in contact with a doctor. Later that night as we all gathered around the campfire Whitney told us that Laudi was going to be evacuated the next morning at five a.m. Alana and here we're going to hike eleven miles and drive straight to the emergency room before the infection spread even more.…

In regard to my groups ability to work well together , I believe my group did in fact work well to plan and execute the exercise we presented to the class last Thursday. Our process started by researching and forming ideas on our own. Then, we came together and decided on what idea we thought would work best with the class. When it came time for us to conduct the exercise with the class, we both contributed in explaining the objectives of the exercise and what expectations we had for the groups.…

Session 6 was conducted with our professor in her office. I stated last week in my reflection paper my concerns pertaining to our professional relationship and her well-being and our professor believed it would be beneficial to have us all meet to discuss the situation and the future of our dyads. However, the duration of this reflection will focus on my interpersonal interactions during the meeting along with incorporating the text to see if my responses align with the concepts stated in the book. The meeting began with our professor directing our attention as to why we were called in to meet.…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

Since we were given the freedom to choose our own teammates to form groups of five, we generally chose to team up with our friends. This resulted in a greater camaraderie within the group. The camaraderie among teammates made us felt that we are all part of the group and each of us held responsibility towards the group. Owing to the mutual understanding between teammates, we got to share and consider each other’s thoughts as well as made important decisions together which reduced a great deal of problems and conflicts within the group.…
