Five Food Groups

The five food groups are grains, protein foods, vegetables, fruits, and dairy. Grain foods are made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or any cereal grain. Grains group has two subgroups and these are whole grains (e.g. whole-wheat flour, bulgur, and brown rice) and refined grains (e.g. white flour, white bread, and white rice). Protein food group are made from poultry, meat, seafood, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, seeds, beans, and peas. However, beans and peas are unique foods due to their exceptional sources of dietary fiber and high nutrient content, such as potassium, folate, iron, and zinc and so, considered as a vegetable group as well. Vegetable group has five subgroups and these are beans and peas, dark green vegetables (e.g. spinach, romaine lettuce, and spring greens), starchy vegetables (e.g. zucchini and yams), red and orange vegetables (e.g. red peppers and tomatoes), and other vegetables that are canned or dried, fresh or frozen, raw or cooked, whole, cut-up into pieces or pureed, Moreover, 100% vegetable juice is counted and considered as a Vegetable group too. Most of the time I don’t measure what I eat; so, I would consider this as one of the resemblances to pre-agricultural diet. Additionally, I mainly eat protein foods and vegetables as well, such as beef, chicken, fish, potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes; however, the way my meal or food processed was either frying or grilling and with added several herbs and spices, such as turmeric, curry, salt, and pepper. I rarely eat fruits groups and nuts along with my meal. I mostly eat these on my spare time or break time. Lastly, the dairy products and grains were rare or non-existent in pre-agricultural diet; while in my diet, I eat dairy and grain foods, such as breakfast cereal, bread, white rice, pasta, tortillas, yogurt; and I drink milk products as well; but I usually choose fat-free (skim)
