The Importance Of College Writing

Throughout the semester, the First-Year Writing program gave students the privilege to become improved writers. Students received the opportunity to identify their strengths and weaknesses and come to a conclusion on what makes favorable writing. While writing the assigned essays this semester, I realized being able to read and write about something that is relatable is extremely critical. When an individual can relate to what they are reading, they will be more engaged compared to reading a piece that fails to connect to them. Although the First-Year Writing program succeeded in building up better writers, there is always room for improvement. The program could consider new pieces of recent work and content that students can form an opinion …show more content…

The prompts given are topics that students can partially relate to and students are able to communicate their thoughts and propose solutions for these debatable …show more content…
It was difficult to try to explain what people in the photo felt and what their looks truly identified about their emotions. Considering this, if the writing program changes the book to a book related to Michael Brown, the responses would most likely be more detailed and accurate. For instance, I have protested and rallied about the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown cases so I can connect to the emotions and expand on the thoughts people had at that moment. When writing about Trayvon Martin in my unit three essay about racial profiling, I was able to expand on my ideas and provide a lot of facts. If all the essays included recent topics, then the writing process would have been smoother and I would have been able to learn new writing techniques while being able to express my thoughts and

When reading The Everyday Writer, written by Andrea A. Lunsford, director of the program in writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, I realized the importance of revising and reviewing of writing. Learning the process of writing will help greatly; therefore, assignments in the future will be more advanced and proper. In fact, peer editing is a fantastic strategy for the perfect paper; sometimes when one edits their own work they might overlook a few things, having someone else edit the paper gives another perspective to the writing. Being open to another opinion and attaining other opinions can open the mind to improve the writing. Seaman High School, where I attend, offers the Writing Center, ran by students and staff is to help improve…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

In a writing-based program, there are many challenges but there are also advantages. One of the challenges that students face is time management (Chambers, 2016). Students will need to make time within their schedules to complete the coursework on time. Often adult students are working full time and managing a household prior to starting college. These students will need to express with their families, and others involved in their everyday life, how important this is to them so that they understand and support the needed time to complete assignments.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Semester Test As the only sophomore in a class of many juniors and seniors, I felt as if my past writing approach was premature compared to my classmates. To succeed I thought I needed to stick to the rules when writing introduction paragraphs, body paragraphs, and conclusions, which made writing papers not very fun. While participating in this class, though, I realized that my style of writing was not to stick to the basics; my style of writing was my personality!…

Before I took the step into a college writing class we had already been drilled in high school by our English teacher Mr Gould. Noble High school really took writing and citing sources seriously, so some things I was taught in my college writing class wasn't really new to me. I feel as if Noble was preparing us for college, so we weren't lost. My senior year of high school, we were required to write an APA research paper and an MLA research paper on a historical topic of my choice. So when it comes to writing long papers i'm no stranger to it, it almost feels normal now and isn't that scary.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

For this assignment, I chose to construct a writing assignment for high school juniors and seniors. The assignment’s structure is meant to help bridge the gap between high school and college writing by introducing high school students to college writing by having them work on and develop skills mentioned in the “WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition” which students should be expected to have by the end of their first year of college. The reason I wanted to construct an assignment that helped prepare high school students for college writing is because of the discussion in class in which we agreed that there was a wide gap between high school and college writing and how to close the space between the two. According to James D. Williams, “A common complaint among college and university faculty is that entering freshmen generally are poorly prepared for the standards and expectations of undergraduate writing, and with good reason.…
