Throughout the semester, the First-Year Writing program gave students the privilege to become improved writers. Students received the opportunity to identify their strengths and weaknesses and come to a conclusion on what makes favorable writing. While writing the assigned essays this semester, I realized being able to read and write about something that is relatable is extremely critical. When an individual can relate to what they are reading, they will be more engaged compared to reading a piece that fails to connect to them. Although the First-Year Writing program succeeded in building up better writers, there is always room for improvement. Writing is an activity more than a skill, one that nourishes and enriches educated people for the rest of their lives. (First Year Writing). ” The Montclair writing program succeeds in educating students in being better writers and provides students with the skills that they will continue to use in life. The program thrives on making students feel that they are not expected to be skilled writers to generate an exceptional piece of work. It is an activity that students can practice and advance their knowledge in writing. The writing prompts allow students to express themselves and their ideas. Students are granted an opportunity to voice their opinions in a scholarly way. It was difficult to try to explain what people in the photo felt and what their looks truly identified about their emotions. Considering this, if the writing program changes the book to a book related to Michael Brown, the responses would most likely be more detailed and accurate. For instance, I have protested and rallied about the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown cases so I can connect to the emotions and expand on the thoughts people had at that moment. When writing about Trayvon Martin in my unit three essay about racial profiling, I was able to expand on my ideas and provide a lot of facts.
