World War I was formally called the “War to End all Wars”. This was because of the number of casualties. How could such a bloody and gruesome war begin? It began in Europe. Tension was building. Most countries were building up their militaries. This was called militarism. Alliances were taking over Europe. The two main alliances were the Central Powers (Germany, the Ottoman Empire) and the Allied Powers (France, United Kingdom and Russia). The turning point was when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was murdered by a Serbian as a form of rebellion. He was captured in Serbia and the Serbian police wouldn't give the assassin to Germany. Germany gave Serbia an ultimatim, if the Serbians
