In the text, Brian Davenport analyzes two types of leadership and the means in which each style responses to suffering. The first style of leadership explored is Servant-leadership. The idea Servant-leadership was introduced in the 1070’s, and there is still debate regarding what the term means (Alavi, R., 2016). Researchers continue to attempt to define and clarify the leadership method. However, one explanation describes the word as one who is motivated to serve others while creating an environment focused on making the future better by being of service to their community today (Alavi, R., 2016). When an individual embarks on leading by the servant-leadership methodology, they spark inspiration and empowerment by those men and women who seek to follow their lead.
Servant-leadership has been best described by ten characteristics which include listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building community (Alavi, R., 2016). However, scholars agree servant-leadership is not limited to these ten characteristics, although they are based on previous research and observations from other academicians. For the sake of this essay, I will refer to him as Pastor Sweet. Pastor Sweet embodied the ten characteristics identified earlier in this essay.
