Bronfedbrenner's Social-Ecological Model

The first speaker was Katelyn Poelker from St. Louis University. The title of her study was Adolescent Gratitude and Envy: Insights from the U.S. and Guatemala. Her study took repeated ideas and notions and coded them into common or similar themes. An example of this being that envy within the United States reflects a more material nature and privatized. Within her main study she took a sample of 25 youth in the United States and the 22 in Guatemala. She found that a correlation between high life satisfaction and lower negative envy rates. This correlation was at its strongest between the ages of 14-16. She specifically examined the notion of counting blessing in relation to gratitude and envy. The title of her study was Promoting Healthy Youth Development. Her study used Bronfedbrenner’s Social-Ecological Model to examine the notions of why adolescents are at greater risk of exposure to violence than adults. Specifically examined how community violence and peer victimizations increase the risk to violence to adolescents. Additionally, looked at why there were high rates within African American communities and the usage of Cyber victimization. Both could be attributed to environmental and social cultural factors. An Example being, that African American adolescents are are less likely to report bullying less even though it happens more often to them. Towards the end she began to explain pros and cons to optional solutions to solving the issue stated above. Such as MTV’s stand up program, the Be Nice program, and school interventions. Both the stand up and be nice program both contain social skill assumptions that aren’t really tested. Through her research she provided research that reflects that interventions allows for the best chance of change and improving aspects of the Bronfedbrenner’s Social-Ecological Model. Overall I enjoyed this presentation very much. She was clear, well informed, had a relevant and interesting topic to speak on. She also had strong communication skills, and presentation skills. The title of her study was Family Relationships during Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: Developmental Pathways and Significance. Her study examined the underlying relationship between older and younger siblings and the progression that takes as one moves out of the house into college. While examining the hierarchical structure in the relationship between siblings and how these relationships become more egalitarian. The study used Used questionnaires to measure responses, noting that these siblings relationships improved as one sibling moved out of the house to college and the implantation of technology occurred. Creating a positive correlation between healthier sibling relationship and the increase technology using for communication. Her ended her presentation by explaining what her current research is and the direction she hopes to take. This current research involves taking these previous sibling pairs and examining the relationship is the same worse or even better and whether there are longitudinal implications of family relationships for emotions and transitional phases. Overall I thought this was the weakest presentation yet, was the most interesting information presented. She was very clear and straight forward with the presentation of her information but, lacked a sense of drive or passion for her work. Which thus reflected with the engagement with the crowd.
