The people who made majority of the decisions in the First Opium Wars were the EIC, Emperor Daoguang, Commissioner Lin Zexu and Captain Charles Elliot. The emperor Daoguang ordered Lin to the city of Canton in Southeast Asia with explicit instructions to arrest and execute anyone smuggling or benefiting from the opium epidemic. When Lin started fulfilling out these duties, the circumstances taken place, led to the EIC sending Charles Elliot to Canton for negation purposes regarding trade, merchants, and war. The emperor ended up removing Lin from Canton due to rising conflict with the British replacing him with Qishan to be in charge of negations.…
Claim: The British refusal to respect the United States’ right to exchange goods as a neutral nation in the early 19th century led directly to the War of 1812, which in its resolution established a treaty that allowed the United States and Great Britain to settle minor disputes without escalating into full-scale warfare. Background: The Napoleonic Wars created a climate in which preventing neutral trade from occurring was a beneficial strategy because regulations were being passed to force the other’s hand, and the war had entered a military deadlock. Initially France passed a law known as the Berlin Decree, which meant that any vessel that was in a French port after visiting a British port could be seized ("French revolutionary and Napoleonic…

The British marched against New Orleans, with hope of capturing the city and separating Louisiana from the rest of the US. Pirate Jean Lafitte warned the US of the pending attack.…

That was what forced China to take action. Opium was harmful to the Chinese society, and illegally importing them was a clear sign of disrespect on the British’s part. The conflict between Britain and China was a result of Britain’s greed and contempt, not a necessary sacrifice for the development of China. If Britain had taken a bit more time and deployed more diplomats instead of warships, it most likely could have opened up China to even more trade agreements without a war. Trading with Western powers was extremely lucrative for the Chinese nobility because of the large amount of silver China gets.…
