Research Paper It was the end of the first great war and times were changing, the time where people had to worry about the german threat was over and they started to focus more on themselves than ever before. It was a more consumer friendly society with new technologies such as the car that only cost two hundred and sixty dollars in 1924 and with credit being easy to obtain it made cars the most attainable luxury one could get. The new technologies also made it easier for woman to clean their homes which lead to woman now having more time for luxuries such as the radio and television. The expression we didn’t starve we lived lean, in a sense summed up what the American family was going through and how strong a woman had to be in order to get through the hard times. One could say that the psychological mindset during the great depression was different for men and women, because of the mindset of being the breadwinner mean usually faced suicidal thoughts and thought less of themselves if they could not find a job, women on the other hand started to see their possession in the household to expand not just doing housework but also doing what was needed to get by. This is mostly exemplified by the women whose husbands left them to either find work in another state or just felt like he was useless to his family and packed up and left. Women who were left alone would sell produce on the streets did odd jobs wherever they could find them, even though women tried to work the men at the time would protest to fire the women and hire the more capable man. This line of thinking was to try to scapegoat anyone who was working to say that they were the reason why the depression was still in full effect; the future would prove the theory of woman working being a bad thing when war time hit in the
