The first experience with Gladiator the movie directed by Ridley Scott was not a great experience at all. Walking into the movie theater with my parents while just being merely 8 years old. I was not aware of the gore and violence I was about to watch, so I spent most of the 155 minutes of the movie with my eyes shut closed, hiding behind my knees. Then to watch the movie again, but this time 15 years later for an assignment is a completely different experience, where I can tolerate the gore and violence as well as understanding what is being said throughout the movie while having the knowledge as well due to my studies.

During his moment as a slave, he gained confidence and guided the other slaves as if they were in a war, along with being a strong leader while in Rome during the gladiator games with the crowd constantly cheering for him and praising him to win each time. Whether the circumstances he was always considered a role model to others, the Romans Soldiers, the slaves and the Roman citizens all looked up to him, but sadly enough was just a fictional character. From one of the sources I used from Exovedate Website it was mentioned that he was quite a mixture of those we have references of. Because there were two emperors “When one died there was uncertainty which might have led to civil war” so Diocletian declared that each emperor would have to choose a man to be his Caesar or heir. These Caesars would take over for an emperor when they died and had authority in the empire as well. In the west the Augustus was Maximian and Diocletian in the east. Maximian chose Constantius as his Caesar and Diocletian chose Galerius as his. This system worked for some time until Maximian and Diocletian both abdicated in 305 C.E..…

Usually the director wants the audience to take some new knowledge away from the film. This skill does not come naturally; movie analysis takes time and practice. Overstreet compares movie-watching and critiquing like learning to how to eat. Start off with easy ones that are good for you, and then work your way towards different genres and types of movies until you can partake of all movies with a distinguished taste. As a Christian viewer, once “we can look at evidence of sin, consider its consequences and resist the temptation to imitate it, this can lead to wisdom” (Overstreet 62).…

After becoming emperor, he “realized there were many deficiencies in the laws of his people” that would remain present after his passing if not corrected (145). In preparation for his succession, out of devotion to leaving his kingdom better off than he received it, he decided “to fill in what was lacking, to reconcile the disagreements, and also to set right what was bad and wrongly expressed” within the laws (145). He also “decided to draw up a will, so that he might make his daughters and illegitimate children to some part of his estate” (146). He divided up his things and desired for each of the four portions to be divvied out to specific recipients. One part was to go to “each metropolitan city” (147).…

Visuals and the Violated: Women in Julie Taymor’s Titus Up until the past few decades, Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus was never taken seriously by critics or audiences. As a revenge tragedy set in ancient Rome, the story is one of never-ending, over the top violence, which viewers may find hard to sit through without rolling their eyes, or at least becoming entirely desensitized. When Julie Taymor created the film version of this text, Titus, in 1999, she attempted to utilize visual violence in a way that an audience can make sense of. Just as Shakespeare used allusions to literature to more convincingly build the world of his Roman Titus Andronicus, Taymor weaves Titus together as a pastiche of references to history and pop culture,…

Julius Caesar remains the greatest, most often used example of the titular “mighty ruler”. This appearance of magnificence stems from the interesting, sometimes bizarre history of his life and accomplishments. For example, Caesar was quite adept in the art of waging war and fighting, being skilled in horseriding and swordsmanship. He always led his army personally, yet not on horseback, as was the norm; he usually ran with his troops barefoot, rain or shine. Whenever his troops were losing, Caesar would often rally them in person, by forcing petrified prisoners to face his troops.…

Journal 1 After the first two weeks of lecture in Cinema Appreciation I have learned a great deal more about what goes into making a film. I was under the impression that there was one magical camera that could change settings to capture the diverse range of images instantaneously. Active viewing was something, I thought I did, but it wasn’t until I took a step back and saw the variety of shots and how each one of them is put together that I realized that there is more then one way to watch a movie. The different ways that a film is shot and how the scene is constructed are ways directors convey meaning to the audience. Film language and mise-en-scene are greatly present during the film Edge of Tomorrow.…
