The First Appendectomy Analysis

In the short story, The First Appendectomy by William A. Nolen, the author explains to the readers how that even though he made numerous mistakes he persevered and did not stop until the job was finally done. Dr. Nolen begins by filling us in on how much experience he actually has,“After two months of my internship... I’d watched the assistant residents work… [and] made an occasional incision” (Nolen 146). Clearly this is very first operation ever, meaning you would assume he of course wasn't going to be perfect yet the hospital still wanted him to do the job. Taking into account that he had a veteran doctor assisting him may have caused some added nerves but it did also make him feel better and became a guide to him, even acknowledging his mistakes yet still encouraging him to continue and finish the job. His right hand man was a veteran doctor which may have caused nerved for him, but luckily as a veteran that man did know how nervous the first operations and encourage Dr.nolen throughout the whole job, aiding him to not stop until he was done. Dr. Nolen make various mistakes throughout the entire operation, including this one, “On the third knot-for the sake of the security- I pulled a little tighter. The stitch broke; the open stump popped up; the cecum, disappeared into the abdomen. I broke out in a cold sweat and my knees started to crumble” (Nolen 151). Dr.nolen had made countless mistakes already but no he couldn't give up, witht the help of the doctor next to him he had to move on and fix his mistakes because he can't change what happened the mistakes were made and he can't change that all he can do now is fix them and finish the job and save the
