Improved Essays
Saint Francis performed many acts of charity and service to the people he encountered within his lifetime. His life was based upon serving other. Although in his early life he did not care for the needs of others, as he grew older he saw the importance and worth of every life. Every person that Saint Francis encountered mattered to him. He saw the greatness in all creation as he truly believed that all creation was God’s creation. He lived out his life like Jesus did, in a life of poverty and service. Thus, Saint Francis called us all to serve others and reach out to people of all walks of life. In order to fulfill the Franciscan call to serve other people, I did a number of different works of service. The first act of service I performed …show more content…
There have been a number of different groups that have come together to seek this change in the world, but the one that might have the biggest impact are the Millennium Development Goals and the 2015 UN Sustainability Development Goals. In 2000, a group of representatives from a number of different countries came together to set goals to end poverty and create a better life for every human being including having resources available to have stable health. These eight goals were set for 2015 to reconvene and see if they were met. In September, the United Nations came together and decided that although great progress had been made, more action needs to take place in order to truly end all suffering from the …show more content…
These three goals are to help those in countries of war and horror be able to not live in fear every day. During Saint Francis’s time, the crusades were happening against the Muslims. Saint Francis himself went over to talk to the Sultan to try and establish peace among both the Christians and the Muslims. Saint Francis would have supported the goals of the United Nations to help settle war torn areas of the world and provide those areas with ways so that they would be able to someday support themselves. There were also six goals having to do with creation. The United Nations wanted to make sure that the earth is taken care of. We only have this earth and it needs to be able to sustain the lives of all the people on it. Special precautions have to be made in order to keep the earth healthy for future generations to come. Saint Francis had a special place in his heart for creation. The song that is about him talks about all the parts of the earth being brother and sister. This means that to him, even creation has value just like every person does. These goals follow what Saint Francis would have wanted and

Francis continued to grow spiritually and felt a calling of going out and spreading the word of the Lord to continue his habits of following the lord. If it weren't for Francis’s ability to stand to his virtues, he would not have made such an impact on the world like he has. Now he had a lot of virtues and I can’t even think of a vice that he had in his later days. Some of the good habits that allowed for him to do such good was following one of God’s most important laws; Loving everyone. Francis treated each person and all of creation as if they were all gifts from God above.…

However Francis has many more actions toward being a hero in this story. Francis is indeed a hero for many reasons, this is mostly shown by his actions of thinking of other people instead of himself or thinking of himself and ending up saving someone. In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

As the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, John Winthrop eagerly established his position through his writings, both in “A Model of Christian Charity” in his attempt to induce the colonists to accept their position working for the good of the whole colony and in his journals. Winthrop simply desires that the colonists will work and live in amity, however any opposition to his authority poses a threat he cannot effortlessly overlook. Mary Dyer, the woman addressed by Winthrop in his journals, is such a threat as she openly expressed her “antinomian” religious beliefs that did not coincide perfectly with the Puritan colony and governor. Winthrop’s readiness to eradicate these antinomian concepts is demonstrated through the graphic account relating the birth of Mary Dyer’s “monster” baby. The preposterous…

The main purpose for the Crusades was having the absolute control of Jerusalem considered a Holy Land, where people made pilgrimages. The one ruling Jerusalem during that period wasn’t allowing any pilgrims into the city, what anguished the Pope and the Catholics since it was a significant city to their religion and beliefs. Peter the Hermit and King Louis IX of France had the same goal of gaining Jerusalem for the Catholic Church by contributing in one way or another. Both were important pieces to the Crusades, yet they had completely different functions. King Louis IX of France was a popular French king that made possible the Seventh and Eight Crusades by organizing and leading it.…

I tend to think of this point as the most important point. Standing and serving those in need doesn't have to just be the poor, it could be a friend who was being bullied, or someone who simply needed help with homework. As Catholics, we stand by people who need assistance rather than running away and ignoring them. This summer, I worked at the Center for Food Action, which is a food bank in north Jersey. Helping out and delivering the canned good and donations to the needy was such an amazing experience.…

As I stated in my essay, but it resonated with me is the Jesuit values of “taking action against the things that degrade human dignity; tending the the whole person”. I know that no matter how sick patient is I will treat them with dignity because we are all on this earth together. Every patient deserves to be treated with compassion and respect, even if they are comatose. One example that illustrates how I exemplified the Jesuit Mission to the Veteran population is when I worked on a Medical Surgical unit at Nellis Air Force Base. We had just received a transfer from the ER, a homeless patient.…

Analysis Essay: "A Model of Christian Charity" In 1630, Puritan layman and leader John Winthrop delivered a sermon to the Puritan people on board the ship Arbella while en route to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Unbeknownst to him or those in attenedence, his sermon would go down in history and serve as a defining literary example of American colonization. The main purpose of his speech can be linked to preparing the puritans on how to develop a new society in a dangerous environment. During the sermon, Winthrop reminded the colony of its purpose and the reason for existence.…
