Well putting my books in my bag the final bell rang signaling the end of a long first day in school. It was my senior year at J.I. Case high school and I couldn’t wait to get outside to have a smoke. As I got outside I noticed most of the usual’s were at our normal meeting spot from previous years, across the street from the school. Smokers were forced over there sometime during my freshmen year by the principle, “If you’re going to kill yourselves do it off school grounds or I’ll have the police move you!” he would yell. That being the case, it became the hangout for smokers as well as non-smokers alike. Nevertheless, as I was approaching the road to cross I fired up a smoke. I decided to take her call outside at this point as I knew she was looking to talk about it and I figured I might as well have a smoke or two. When I opened the front door Stumpy was standing there with his fist up in the air about to knock. I quickly told Christena “I have to go, Joe is on my porch I’ll have him call you”. “What the hell are you doing here man...? You ran away didn’t you?” I asked as I lite up a smoke. Straightaway he goes into a verbal rage, crying and yelling as if he was talking to an invisible person. After he calmed down a bit he tells me his dad was molding him into a Marine. “I never wanted to join, I was forced to and now my plan of skipping school backfired, they signed for me to leave before schools finished.” I wasn’t going to let him sleep outside so I snuck him in the house.
Over the next few weeks, he stayed with me I learned more about what had gone on in his life. He painted a picture of his father being a controlling monster, as his best friend I felt bad and wanted to help in any way I could. I let him stay in my basement every day until I got home from school. He told me that Christena would come over for her lunch break when I would ask if he had talked to her. I didn’t push the matter but I knew it was a lie because she would ask me about
