Bruno gives Shmall a piece of food, he eats it, and then a soldier comes into the room.
The soldier became mad at Shmall for eating the food and when the soldier ask Bruno if he gave hime the food, he says he did not give him the food (Herman). Bruno did not stand up for his new friend and because he did not stand up, Shmall had been punished for something he did not do. He ends up hanging a lot of people, but only because no one stood up to him the townsperson said: “‘Dead,’ I whispered: and amiably/‘Murdered,’ the Hangman correctedme:/‘First the alien, then the Jew.../I did no more than you let me do’” (Ogden 4.29-32). The man was the only person left and there was no one to stand up for him. The Hangman only did what he let him do. He did not stand up for the wrong thing the Hangman was doing, so he had to pay the price (being dead).
